Board member absent: Yuan, Grace: Webmaster

Also attended: Fu, I-Ping

Agenda:

  • Sponsorship:

Tseng opened the meeting by reporting sponsorship from TECRO and UVA Asian Institute for the CLTA-VA events.

  • The CLTA-VA spring workshop:

The spring workshop will be held in the college of William & Mary. The funding is now available. Date is to be announced. The theme of the workshop will be decided after consulting with advisors.

  • Spring election:

According to the CLTA-VA bylaws, 2011 spring elections will be held by the end of spring, before the start of summer. Tentative plan is to invite members to email their votes to Qian Su, secretary-treasurer. The vote form will be created and made available online.

  • Fundraising Committee:

Fundraising is an ongoing effort. It is suggested to form a committee to oversee these efforts. Fu suggested Tseng to head fundraising committee.

  • CLCTE

The CLTA-VA is invited to participate in the 1st Annual Chinese Language and Culture Technology Education (CLCTE) Conference, on 11/6/2010. Due to time conflict and lack of available resources, CLTA-VA won’t be able to participate.

  • Non Profit Organization

Fu reiterated the benefits of a non-profit organization; one of which is that members’ donation to CLTA-VA will be tax-deductable.

  • Professional Development Award

The application for the Professional Development Award should be submitted before deadline next year. The selection criteria are merit-based and need-based, and a successful candidate should be a full time teacher who is willing to serve.

  • Summative report on CLTA-VA annual conference

The 2nd CLTA-VA annual conference is a successful meeting. But the common feeling among board members is that we should encourage members and friends to submit required information before deadline to ensure an efficient organization of the conference.

Post-conference work include to post presenters’ ppt. file online to share with colleagues. Tseng will contact presenters and ask them to forward presentation files to Yuan.

It is noticed that, with the increase of the number of Chinese sessions in the conference, sometimes people were unable to attend all sessions that they are interested in. Board members discussed the possible practice of virtual classroom, i.e. video presentations and publish presentations online. Though there are many details to work on at this point, it is a route that can be explored in the future.

  • CLTA-VA bank account

Su gave update on the CLTA-VA’s bank account. To encourage Chinese teaching community’s involvement, CLTA-VA has been offering free spring workshops and free FLAVA-VA luncheon for members. Thanks to members’ and friends’ support, CLTA-VA is currently financially sound.

  • Newsletter

Liu will collect information of members’ summer activities and noteworthy accomplishmentsand to include itin the October newsletter. Suggested activities might include: study abroad program, STARTALK, Confucius institution, etc.

  • FLAVA 100th Birthday

Next year, FLAVA will celebrate its 100th Birthday. CLTA-VA is brainstorming ideas to celebrate this special event. One suggestion is to put on a talent show to illustrate how to integrate Chinese Arts/movies into language teaching. More ideas are welcome.

  • Website password change

Yuan will update website password.

  • Job resources

Fu I-ping will forward CLTA job list to Yuan.

Respectfully submitted by Qian Su on November 1st, 2010
