CLOVERLEAF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WIDE PTO BUSINESS MEETING

INVOLVING PTO BOARD, PARENTS AND TEACHERS

OCTOBER 1, 2009

THE MEETING WAS OPENED BY MR HARWELL WHO WELCOMED EVERYONE TO THE FIRST PTO BUSINESS MEETING AT CLOVERLEAF. STATED ONE ITEM OF AGENDA WOULD BE BYLAWS. COPIES WERE PASSED OUT FOR REVIEW.

ITEMS OF DISCUSSION INCLUDED:

  1. CONNIE POPE GAVE TREASURER REPORT SINCE MICHELLE BORETSKI WAS ABSENT. THE CURRENT BALANCE IS $7062.94. WE HAVE RECEIVED ARTICLES OF INC. WHICH IS NECESSARY FOR APPLICATION FOR 501C STATUS. FUNDRAISERS ARE BEING PLANNED IN ORDER TO BALANCE THE BUDGET.
  2. STEPHANIE MCNEILL REMINDED THOSE IN ATTENDANCE THE CONSTANT NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS AND HOW IMPORTANT THEY ARE TO CLOVERLEAF AS A WHOLE. SIGN UP SHEETS WERE PLACED FOR THOSE WISHING TO DONATE TIME, EFFORTS, OR ITEMS—ANY AND ALL HELP IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED!!!
  3. KAREN SHEA ANNOUNCED THE CLOVERLEAF FALL FESTIVAL AS OCTOBER 23RD FROM 6-9PM. SHE MADE REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS. SHE GAVE A REVIEW OF EVENTS THAT ARE PLANNED—THIS WILL BE THE LAST CHANCE FOR PURCHASE HAND TILES THIS YEAR. THEME IS “CLOVERLEAF COLTS CORRAL”.
  4. DERONE MCNEILL-PRESIDENT CYAA SPOKE ABOUT FALL SPORTS. CURRENTLY THERE ARE 400 CHILDREN PARTICIPATING IN FALL SPORTS!!! GO COLTS!!! HE REPORTED THE CYAA HAS BEEN VERY BUSY AND HAVE TO DATE TAKEN IN APPROX $30,000 BUT HAVE ALREADY SPENT THE MAJORITY OF THOSE FUNDS WITH ITEMS CONSTANTLY IN NEED. HE ANNOUNCED A FUNDFRAISER THE UPCOMING SATURDAY AT O’CHARLEYS IN MOORESVILLE FROM 8-10 AM. FOOD WAS DONATED BY O’CHARLEYS FOR A PANCAKE BREAKFAST. 300 TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE FOR $7 EACH WITH CYAA GETTING 100% PROFIT. HE ALSO REPORTED THE CYAA BOARD HAS 2 AT LARGE MEMBERS POSITIONS AVAILBLE.   5. NEILL FURR FROM YOKEFELLOW MINISTRIES SPOKE CONCERNING THE HUNGERWALK SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 3RD AT MACANDERSON PARK AT 8:30AM RAIN OR SHINE. CLOVERLEAF STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ASKED TO HELP FILL RED BARRELS WITH CANNED FOODS FOR THOSE IN NEED. MR FURR STATED HE HAD VISITED CLASSROOMS THIS WEEK AT CLOVERLEAF AND STATED WE HAVE “COMPASSIONATE KIDS THAT ARE EXCITED TO HELP”
  6. KAREN SHEA INTRODUCED PTO BOARD MEMBERS THAT WERE IN ATTENDANCE—EACH PERSON STOOD AS THEIR NAME WAS CALLED.
  7. MR HARWELL ADDRESSED THE ISSUE OF THE BYLAWS—THESE ARE PRESENTED BY THE BOARD FOR APPROVAL. MRS TAB MADE THE MOTION TO APPROVE, AND SECOND WAS GIVEN BY MICHELLE BORETSKI—THERE WAS NO OPPOSITION. HE THEN ANNOUNCED THE RESULTS OF CHICK FIL-A SPIRIT NIGHT SALES $4224 WITH A CHECK GIVEN TO PTO FOR $642—THIS BEING THE BIGGEST NIGHT EVER. HE SAID IF CHICK FIL-A NIGHT IN DECEMBER EXCEEDS THOSE AMOUNTS HE WILL DRESS IN THE COW SUIT AND GREET CAR RIDERS IN THE LINE OUT FRONT OF SCHOOL. NOVEMBER SPIRIT NIGHT IS PLANNED FOR EAST COAST WINGS. MR HARWELL INVITED PARENTS TO COME VISIT THE SCHOOL TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING—HE STATED ON 19 WALK THRUS HE HAD MADE HE SAW 19 TIMES USE OF TECHNOLOGY. STAFF DEVELOPMENT IS BEING PLANNED FOR SMART BOARD TRAINING. HE REPORTED THAT EVERY TEACHER HAS THEIR OWN SMART BOARD, DOCUMENT CAMERA, AND FLIP VIDEO CAMERA TO USE IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. HE UPDATED THE SCIENCE LAB IS UP AND RUNNING WITH ANIMALS SUCH AS FISH, TURTLES, GUINEA PIGS, RATS, TERANTULA, AND RABBITS. THE CRITTER CLUB MEETS TWICE WEEKLY AND IS BRINGING AWARENES TO KIDS. HE THEN REPORTED 5TH GRADE HAS COMPLETED RESEARCH ON RECYCLING. THE CITY WILL NOT PICK UP RECYCLING AT CLOVERLEAF BECAUSE WE ARE OUTSIDE CITY LIMITS BUT ONLY BY 75 FEET!!!!! FIFTH GRADERS HAVE WRITTEN LETTERS TO THE MAYOR COSTI KUTTEH ASKING FOR RECYCLING PICK UP, HE WILL COME TO CLOVERLEAF TO RECEIVE THOSE LETTERS IN PERSON.
  8. JANE HUDSON REPORTED THAT 3RD, 4TH, AND 5TH GRADERS ARE LEARNING ABOUT THE BIG 6 FOR RESEARCH. THEY ARE LEARNING ABOUT COPYRIGHT LAWS, AND HOW TO SITE SOURCES WHEN THEY USE THEM. THEY ARE BECOMING 21 CENTURY LEARNERS.
  9. MRS TAB GAVE AN UPDATE ABOUT 5TH GRADE. SHE SHOWED THE DAILY SCHEDULE OF A 5TH GRADER—BUSY!!! SHE STATED THEY HAVE FINISHED A RESEARCH MODEL –SCIENCE PROJECTS ARE DUE MONDAY—THEY ARE LEARNING ABOUT CARBON CYCLE. IN SOCIAL STUDIES THEY ARE LEARNING ABOUT LAND FORMS- GOOGLE EARTH-CURRENT EVENTS—IN COLTS TIME THEY ARE GRAPHING IN MATH AND GO INTO READING GROUPS
  10. MRS SHOTKUS GAVE AN UPDATE ABOUT 1ST GRADE. SHE REPORTED IN HONOR OF GRANDPARENTS DAY THEY CAME IN TO READ WITH THE CHILDREN. IN SCIENCE THEY ARE ROTATING BETWEEN EACH TEACHER WHO GIVES A DIFFERENT TOPIC. SHE SHOWED VIDEOS FROM THE CLASSROOM WHICH SHOWED A MATH LESSON USING THE DOCUMENT CAMERA COUNTING CUBES TO DO ADDITION. SHE ALSO HAD VIDEO CLIPS OF GOLDEN HORSESHOE REWARDS BEING ENJOYED BY THE CHILDREN. BROOKE BORETSKI GAVE A PRESENTATION OF HOW THEY ARE USING THE DOCUMENT CAMERA TO SHARE HER WORK AS AN EXAMPLE TO OTHERS IN HER CLASS. MR SHOTKUS SAID 1ST GRADERS ARE ALSO STUDYING ABOUT SEASONS AND APPLE TREES.
  11. MRS FERRELL GAVE AN UPDATE ON 3RD GRADE. THEY ARE LEARNING A NEW MATH PROGRAM, THEY ARE LEARNING ABOUT SOIL IN SCIENCE, IN MATH THE ARE ON CHARTS AND GRAPHS. THEY ARE USING “RESEARCH-WRITE-COMMUNICATE” TO COORDINATE SUBJECTS. IN READING THEY ARE LEARNING ABOUT REALISM VS FANTASY. SHE DEMONSTRATED A WEBSITE PEARSONSUCCESS.NET. IT CAN BE USED TO TRACK YOUR CHILDS PROGRESS, AND ALSO YOU CAN GET ACCESS TO TEXTBOOKS ON LINE. IN COLTS TIME 3RD GRADERS ARE STUDYING ABOUT MONEY.
  12. MRS CONINE GAVE AN UPDAYE ON 2ND GRADE. SHE SHOWED HOW HER CLASS USES WEBPAGES. SHE REPORTED 2ND GRADERS ARE INVOLVED WITH SWIM LESSONS AT THE YMCA TO LEARN SAFETY SKILLS AND ARE HAVING FUN WITH THEIR FRIENDS. SHE REPORTED THEY HAVE BEEN READING ALOUD—CURRENTLY THE BOOK HOW TO EAT FRIED WORMS. SHE DEMONSTRATED HOW TO USE NC WISE OWLS ON THE SCHOOL WEBPAGE FOR RESEARCH. SHE ALSO SHOWED SWIMMING PHOTOS AND PHOTOS OF THE CHILDREN ENJOYING THEIR GOLDEN HORSESHOE REWARD.
  13. MRS EMERY GAVE AN UPDATE ON 4TH GRADE. HER CLASS HAS FOUND A WEBSITE WIZZARDS AND PIGS BUT DUE TO TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY WAS UNABLE TO DEMONSTRATE BUT ENCOURAGED EVERYONE TO CHECK IT OUT AT HOME. SHE STATED 4TH GRADERS ARE LEARNING ABOUT SYNONYMS & ANNONYMS-RHYMING. ONE OF HER STUDENTS MICHAEL SAID IT WAS FUN!!!
  14. MRS COCKRAN GAVE AN UPDATE ON KINDERGARTEN. SHE REPORTED KINDERS ARE INVOLVED IN A READING PROGRAM ON THE COMPUTER, THEY ARE MAKING ALPHABET BOOKS, THEY ARE LEARNING TO FIND WEBSITES TO USE IN THE CLASSROOM SUCH AS STARFALL.COM

MR HARWELL CLOSED THE MEETING BY STATING THERE IS LOTS ALREADY HAPPENING AT CLOVERLEAF WITH MUCH MORE TO COME!! HE REINFORCED THAT KIDS LEARN WHEN THEY ARE HAVING FUN!!! HE AGAIN WELCOMED PARENTS TO VISIT THE SCHOOL AND THEIR CHILDS CLASSROOMS. HE ANNOUNCED THE BOOKFAIR WILL BEGIN OCTOBER 12, AND VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED IF ANYONE CAN HELP.
