Meeting called to order at 12:05 pm

Ø  Rick moved to approve the minutes of the September 12, 2014 meeting, and Lee Ann seconded. Motion passed.

Ø  Rick moved to approve ART 115— Art of the Western World: Ancient through Medieval as a new catalog course, and Terri seconded. Ian explained that this is being offered as part of the SUNY seamless transfer initiative. Motion passed.

Ø  Rick moved to approve ART 116— Art of the Western World: Renaissance through the Twentieth Century as a new catalog course, and Chrisa seconded. Motion passed.

Ø  Information only: THE 180—Theater Technical Support will be a topics course to be offered in Spring 2015. Vicky briefly explained the course, and members were enthusiastic about the offering.

Ø  Information only: MUS 180—Jazz Appreciation will be a topics course to be offered in Spring 2015. Ian explained the course, and again the members were enthusiastic about the offering.

Ø  Cheryl asked that suggestions (e.g. 1st floor TV, the portal, etc.) for marketing new groupings of courses be sent to her.

Ø  Rick moved to approve ART 117—Digital Painting as a new catalog course, and Terri seconded. Two corrections were made, it is not a topics course as indicated on the form, and the course start date should be Spring 2015. Both corrections were accepted, and the motion passed.

Ø  Rick moved to approve ART 118—Forensic Photography as a new catalog course, and Terry seconded. Ian agreed to correct the submission form to indicate that the course is a catalog course, and not a topics course. Motion passed.

Ø  Rick moved to approve RDG 095—Reading Foundations as a catalog course, and Terri seconded. Carey explained that this had been offered as a topics course, and now it is to be a catalog course. The title makes it clear that it is a remedial course. Chrisa mentioned that the CAMS coding would need to be updated with the new number. Motion passed.

Ø  Rick moved to approve ENG 099—Composition Fundamentals as a catalog course, and Terri seconded. Carey explained that this course is to replace the current ENG 081 topics course. Carey shared the data from the first semester, which was encouraging, though the numbers were small. Students who had failed ENG 094 the previous semester, thought the new format of additional instruction was more helpful. Motion passed.

Ø  Information only: GEL 180—Honors Geology Research Conference Experience will be a topics course in the Honors Program. Angela recommended a change to the requirements—that students meet the criteria for honors coursework instead of “accepted into the honors program” and add “or permission of the instructor.” Lynn indicated that she will take those suggestions back to Gary Henry, the instructor. There was a further general discussion of how the current honors courses are doing. There is enthusiasm among the committee members for the honors program and other possible course offerings.

Ø  Information only: PHY180—Exoplants will be a topics course in the Honors Program. Angela made the same suggestion (as in GEL 180) on who was eligible to be in the class, and Rick agreed to the changes.

Ø  There was a discussion on changes to the proposal forms. It was recommended that the course number and title be on both pages of the form. Members liked the drop-down menu for lab/studio component. Rick moved to approve the new course proposal and course revision forms with the changes mentioned, and Terri seconded. Motion passed.

Ø  There was a general discussion of lab/studio fees, with questions of where they show up in the budget. This is being further researched.

Ø  Motion to adjourn by Rick, and the meeting was adjourned at 12:59 pm.

Respectfully submitted by:

Catherine K. Eloranto

The date of the next meeting will be October 26, 2014 at Noon in Room 350M.
