A number of posts are available at FY1 level,covering Medical and Surgical specialties at various sites across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.These posts are not recognised for training however will offer similar educational exposure and opportunities.
These posts may be eligible for Tier 2 General Sponsorship if no suitable UK or EEA national is identified for the post.

Today Glasgow is a compact, vibrant and modern city. In fact Glasgow’s scale comes as a surprise to some people. It has the largest suburban rail network outside London and is second only to the UK Capital as a retail centre. There are top-ranking schools, excellent leisure facilities, beautiful golf courses and elegant accommodation across all price ranges. The night life and restaurants are renowned and its opera, theatres, art galleries and museums offer plenty of cultural stimulation.
From Glasgow, the West of Scotland’s jewels are within easy reach. Loch Lomond is just 45 minutes drive, a little further to the Argyll peninsula – or over the sea to Arran, Skye, Iona and Mull.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland – offering many opportunities to ensure job satisfaction and career development. We provide a wide range of services from community-based care through to the full range of general hospital services.
A considerable volume of complex surgical work is carried out in units that provide the country’s tertiary and national services serving a population of approximately 1.1 million people. Our patients not only come from Glasgow but also, in some instances, from the whole of the West of Scotland and for our National Services, from the whole of Scotland. We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s 3 universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We provideexcellent facilities for students and their tutors in the brand new £15 million state of the art WolfsonMedicalSchool based at GlasgowUniversity and adjacent to the Western Infirmary site. Excellent educational facilities are also available at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
There are 8 hospitals north of the River Clyde: Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital), Western Infirmary, StobhillHospital, Gartnavel GeneralHospital (including the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre), GlasgowDentalHospital and School, DrumchapelHospital, BlawarthillHospital and LightburnHospital. South of the river are the Southern General Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary. Within Clyde the RoyalAlexandraHospital is in Paisley, InverclydeRoyalHospital is in Greenock and the Vale of Leven District General Hospital is situated in Alexandria.
The Southern GeneralHospital
The Southern General Hospital is a teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 900. The Hospital is sited in the south-west of Glasgow and provides a comprehensive range of acute and related clinical services including Accident and Emergency, Dermatology, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Genito-Urinary Medicine, Geriatric Assessment, Geriatric Rehabilitation, Geriatric Day Services, Gynaecology, Neonatal Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology and Young Physically Disabled Continuing Care.
The range of services provided by the Department of Medicine include the sub-specialties of Cardiology, Rheumatology, Haematology, Diabetes, Chest Diseases, Gastro-Intestinal, Liver Diseases and Endocrinology. The surgical services include a five-bedded Intensive Therapy Unit plus a 6 bedded High Dependency Unit. The Obstetrics, Urology and Dermatology Departments located at the Southern General Hospital provide the single inpatient location for the whole population of South Glasgow. Ear, Nose and Throat and Dental Outpatient Services are also provided on the Southern General Hospital site.
The Institute of Neurological Sciencesis based on the Southern General campus and provides Neurosurgical, Neurological, Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuroradiological facilities for the population of Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Maxillo-facial and ENT departments have relocated here to provide comprehensive head and neck cancer care and other services. The Institute is equipped with a Magnetic Resonance Imager, two Computerised Axial Tomography scanners and angiography facilities.
The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Unit for Scotland provides acute and rehabilitation spinal injuries services to the whole of Scotland.
WESTMARC - The West of Scotland Mobility and Rehabilitation Centre provides regional prosthetic and seating services in a purpose-built facility on the Southern General Hospital campus. The National Centre for Training in Prosthetics and Orthotics of Strathclyde University is also housed in this facility, which offers increased opportunity for collaboration
The Department of Podiatry (Chiropody) is a purpose-built 24-chair clinic, including a minor procedures theatre. The service is based on the Southern General Hospital site. The NHS Board and GlasgowCaledonianUniversity jointly provide this service
Day surgery is provided in a purpose-built twin operating theatre suite. Full supporting accommodation includes a five-bed recovery area, a five-bay reception/patient preparation area and ten day beds. The Day Surgery Unit is located in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This facility will transfer to the VictoriaAmbulatoryCareHospital in 2009.
Assessment and Rehabilitation Services for the Young Physically Disabled are provided from a purpose-built 30-bed unit plus a 24-bed Continuing Care Unit. This service is delivered on a Glasgow-wide basis and is part of a comprehensive service that includes continuing care and a Community Rehabilitation Team.
All the above services are supported by other Consultant-based services which incorporate diagnostic and clinical components including Anaesthetics, Laboratory Medicine, Neuroanaesthetics, Neuropathology, Clinical Neurophysiology (including EEG, EMG and EP), Neuroradiology and Radiology including a Spiral CT Scanner. There is also available a wide range of therapeutic services which include Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy.
There are close links with the Psychiatric and Psycho-Geriatric services provided on site by the Greater Glasgow Primary Care Trust, which operates from 74 beds for acute adult psychiatric patients.
The Victoria Infirmary
The Victoria Infirmary is a teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of 370. Situated in the south-east of Glasgow, this hospital provides a range of health care services including Accident and Emergency, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Geriatric Assessment and Orthopaedic Surgery.
The range of services provided by the Department of Medicine includes the sub-specialties of Cardiology, Rheumatology, Haematology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastro-Enterology, Diabetes and Endocrinology. The surgical services include an 8 bed High Dependency Unit, a 5 bedded I.T.U. and the sub-specialties of Vascular, Breast Care and Colorectal surgery. Urology Ophthalmology and Dermatology Outpatient services are provided, supported by inpatient beds at the Southern General Hospital.
Day Surgery is provided by two theatres and twenty four recovery bays.
The above services are supported by other consultant based services, which incorporate diagnostic and clinical components including Anaesthetics, Laboratory Medicine and Radiology including Spiral CT. There is also available a wide range of therapeutic services which include Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy and Speech & Language Therapy.
The Mansionhouse Unit & Mearnskirk House
The Mansionhouse Unit is in close proximity to the Victoria Infirmary and accommodates 220 elderly patients for geriatric assessment, rehabilitation and continuing care, as well as housing the Geriatric Day Unit. Mearnskirk House in Newton Mearns is a purpose-built 72 bed facility providing continuing care for the elderly.
New VictoriaAmbulatoryCareHospital
The ACH opened in June 2009 with eight theatre suite and a generous supporting recovery area. The services using the theatre facilities include general surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, gynaecology, urology, ENT, oral surgery and chronic pain services. The theatre sessions will be composed of patients having mainly minor operative procedures
In addition there will be a 12 bedded 23 hour stay unit which will be open from Monday 10am till Saturday 10am
University Links
Both the Southern General Hospital and the VictoriaHospitals have built a sound academic and research base over the years and have an excellent teaching reputation, with libraries and lecture suites with comprehensive audio/visual facilities on both sites. There are close links with the University of Glasgow's Faculty of Medicine, including Professors within Neurosurgery, Neuropathology and Neurology.
Western Infirmary and GartnavelHospitals
The Western Infirmary is a University teaching hospital located in the west end of Glasgow.
with a wide range of specialist services on site including Intensive Care, Coronary Care, Acute Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics and Specialist Renal Services. The Regional Burns Unit is located at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Maxillofacial and Neurosurgery are located at the Southern General Hospital site.
Glasgow Royal Infirmary
Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a major teaching hospital and has all major specialties on site with the exception of Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic surgery. It provides the Accident and Emergency service for the Eastern district of Glasgow (population 161,000) and provides all the major specialties including Intensive Care, Coronary Care and Renal Dialysis There are Professorial Units in Anaesthetics, Cardiology, Human Nutrition, Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. At GRI medical emergencies are admitted to an acute medicine unit and later triaged to general medical, respiratory, gastroenterology or care of the elderly wards. Admissions range between 35 to 60 per day.
There are 4 specialty units with primary responsibility to general (internal) medicine, namely, Respiratory Medicine, University Medical Unit (has special interests in Diabetes, Nutrition, Thyroid Disease, Clinical Pharmacology and rheumatology), Gastroenterology and Diabetes and Endocrinology. Consultants from the Geriatric Unit also contribute to receiving duties. There is a separate Stroke Ward. Geriatric Medicine is based on-site, with additional beds at LightburnHospital.
There are close ties with the University of Strathclyde Department of Bio-Engineering and the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics.
StobhillAmbulatoryCareHospital (ACH)
The Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital (ACH) opened in June 2009 with a significant proportion of day surgery and 23 hour surgery being transferred there. This exciting development has involved redesign of current working practices in order to allow a streamlined service provision over two sites.
A new £100 million state of the art Ambulatory Care Hospital (ACH) recently opened at Stobhill and is one of the largest hospitals in Scotland covering 4 floors and has an area the size of 30,000 square metres – the equivalent of five football pitches. It is expected to treat around 400,000 patients each year and supports a wide range of outpatient, diagnostic and day surgery services. The ACH also has 12 short stay surgical beds enabling clinicians to extend the range of surgical procedures offered within the new hospital. It is recognised as one of the most modern and well-equipped hospitals in the country.
InverclydeRoyalHospital
The InverclydeRoyalHospital is situated in Greenock, approximately 40 minutes from Glasgow it provides an extensive range of acute health services to a population of around 125,000 in the urban and rural areas of Inverclyde, Largs, Bute and the CowalPeninsula.
InverclydeRoyalHospital first opened in 1979. It currently has a bed complement of 395 including facilities for Care of the Elderly, Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry under the management of Inverclyde Community Health Partnership are also included on-site.
With an annual income in excess of £90 million (with £60 million being allocated to Surgery & Anaesthetics Directorate across 3 the sites in Clyde), in 07/08 the Hospital treat over 25,000 inpatients, over 91,000 outpatients and 9,400 day cases. Approximately 32,000 people were seen in Accident and Emergency. The Hospital has developed excellent links with tertiary centres in Glasgow and has a well-founded reputation for providing a high standard of medical teaching and postgraduate medical education facilities.
As part of the largest NHS Provider in the United Kingdom, practitioners based at the InverclydeRoyalHospital provide acute services for Greenock and surrounding area along with some specialist services.
The town of Greenock situated 25 miles to the West of Glasgow. It is known worldwide for its historical contribution to the shipping industry and remains a busy port. There are excellent road and public transport links with the rest of Scotland and with the progressive upgrading of the main road route to England, journeys to locations south of the border are becoming ever easier. Glasgow Airport (average flight time to London Heathrow – one hour) is located 18 miles from the Hospital and has excellent scheduled links to the other major airports in the British Isles, Europe, Middle East and North America.
Property prices in the area are naturally dependent upon type and location. The hospital is surrounded by beautiful countryside and small villages. There are a number of excellent schools and further education facilities with Glasgow offering 3 Universities in addition to the University of Paisley.
The major specialities, based at InverclydeRoyalHospital are Orthopaedic Surgery; Accident & Emergency; General Medicine; General Surgery and Urology; ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, midwife led Maternity Services and Care of the Elderly. Psychiatric Assessment beds are situated within the Hospital, although under a different management. Major regional specialities available in Glasgow are, Maxillofacial Surgery and Burns, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Neurosurgery.
Royal Alexandria and Vale of Leven Hospitals
The RoyalAlexandraHospital first opened in 1986, although the Maternity Unit was established on site in 1970. The RoyalAlexandraHospital has a bed complement of 670 including facilities for Care of the Elderly. Also Facilities for Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry under the management of Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership are also included on-site.
With an annual income in excess of £90 million (with £60 million being allocated to Surgery & Anaesthetics Directorate across 3 sites), employing over 2,000 staff, the RoyalAlexandraHospital is one of the largest and most modern of its kind in Scotland. In any one year, the Hospital treats over 38,000 inpatients and over 123,000 outpatients and 14,000 day cases. Approximately 64,000 people were seen in Accident and Emergency and there were 3229 births in the Maternity Unit. The Hospital has developed excellent links with tertiary centres in Glasgow and has a well-founded reputation for providing a high standard of medical teaching and postgraduate medical education facilities.
