As you may be aware, the new SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital and new RoyalHospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.

With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current RoyalHospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.

Gartnavel GeneralHospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.

This post is in the General Adult Psychiatric Service and is available from 1.6.2015 until 4.8.2015. The post is based at Dykebar and Leverndale Hospitals. Adult General inpatient services are based at Dykebar Hospital,Paisley and Leverndale Hospital, Glasgow. The community teams work from two community resource centres in Paisley. These community services include home treatment and primary care mental health functions in additions to two community mental health teams. The successful applicant would have access to a range of useful training experiences in general Adult Psychiatry.

This post has not been approved for Training purposes by NES.

To practise medicine in the UK you need to hold both GMC full registration and a Licence to Practise.

1.This is a full time Clinical Fellow post, fixed term from 01/05/15 – 04/08/15.

The successful applicant will be based at DykebarHospital.

2.Present Service Provision

Community mental health services in Renfrewshire are part of Renfrewshire CHP, and cover a total population of 181,481. The Mental Health Partnership for Greater Glasgow and Clyde supports and coordinates the delivery of adult mental health services delivered by CHCPs in four divisions across the Board area: South Clyde, South Glasgow, West Glasgow and Northeast Glasgow.

There is an overarching Adult Mental Health Partnership for Greater Glasgow and Clyde ensuring consistency of the adult mental health services delivered by the CHCPs. The Service General Manager for Mental Health in Renfrewshire is Katrina Phillips and the Clinical Director is Dr Alex Thom. The Medical Director of the Partnership is Dr Michael Smith.

In Renfrewshire, the inpatient unit is based at DykebarHospital. There are currently 13 acute inpatient beds based at DykebarHospital with a further 24 bedded ward in LeverndaleHospital . The intensive psychiatric care unit beds are situated in InverclydeRoyalHospital. There are a total of 20 beds providing inpatient intensive rehabilitation and continuing care services for South Clyde. There is also an Out-Patient Department, Psychology and Psychotherapy Departments and an Alcohol Problems Clinic.

The RoyalAlexandraHospital has 40 old age psychiatry acute beds and an old age psychiatry DayHospital based on a DistrictGeneralHospital site. A further 24 beds are based at DykebarHospital.

Adult Mental Health Services are currently based round two integrated health and social work community mental health teams (CMHTs) - a Paisley CMHT based at the Charleston Centre, Paisley and a West Renfrewshire/Renfrew CMHT is based at Mile End Mill in Paisley . Significant expansion in the staff complement for both CMHTs was carried out in 2009.

The Paisley CMHT is based at the Charleston Centre, and currently comprises 2 Staff Grades, 0.5 Nurse Team Leader, 5.0 G Grades, 3.0 Staff Nurses, 2.0 Support Workers, 2.0 OT's, 1.0 Consultant Psychologist, 1.0 Senior Social Worker, 4.0 Social Workers, 1.0 Social work Assistant, and 3.0 SW Support Workers.

The West Renfrewshire/Renfrew Adult Community Mental Health Team currently consists of 1 Staff Grade, 0.5 H Grade, 5.0 G Grades, 3.0 Senior Nurses, 5.0 Support Workers, 1.0 Senior Occupational Therapist, 1.0 Grade A Psychologist, 4.0 Social Workers/MHOs and 1.0 Social Work Assistant.

The “Doing Well” team (6.4 clinicians including 0.2 WTE consultant psychiatrist) provides treatment for all patients presenting with a new episode of low mood in West Renfrewshire. This service has been extended from Nov 2008 and now forms a new Primary Care Mental Health function across all of Renfrewshire.

The Intensive Home Treatment Team (IHTT) has been in operation since April 2008. The team provides emergency assessments, gate keeps all new admissions and provides home treatment where indicated. The team operates from 9am to 8pm weekdays and 9am to 5pm weekends and holidays. On call telephone support is available overnight. Medical input to the team is 9-5pm weekdays only. The team comprises of 1Consultant Psychiatrist, 0.5 Specialty Doctor 1.8 Team Secretary, 1 Team Leader, 9 Senior IHTT Practitioners (9 nurses) and 3 IHTT Practitioners (2 nurses, 1 OT) and 2 support workers.

The Early Intervention in Psychosis service (ESTEEM) provides intensive input for patients diagnosed with psychosis.

The Glasgow wide CPN out of hours service covers Renfrewshire for overnight work.

The Psychotherapy Department currently comprises a full-time consultant psychotherapist , two full-time nurse therapists and two psychoanalysts.

Child and Adolescent Services are based at JohnstoneHospital but the inpatient beds are provided at GartnavelRoyalHospital and YorkhillHospital respectively. There are 10 Learning Disability assessment/treatment beds and a Community Learning Disability Team.

There are 10 training grade posts (including one FY2 post), 6 Specialty Doctor posts and generally 1-3 Specialist Registrars at any one time.

4.Duties of the Post

CLINICAL WORK

To carry out the duties of a core trainee in general adult psychiatry. The post is part of RCGP and RCPysch approved training schemes and has excellent training opportunities in general adult psychiatry. This will involve the assessment and treatment of patients with mental illness in the inpatient wards at DykebarHospital and, potentially, in the outpatient setting. The trainee will work closely with the CMHTs and Intensive Home Treatment Team. On call duties include the assessment of psychiatric emergencies at RAH, Dykebar and LeverndaleHospital plus general medical and psychiatric care to the psychiatric in patient beds at RAH and DykebarHospital. The applicant on rare occasion may have to attend Blythswood House to review patients. Applicants should be able to evidence competencies of an FY2 doctor and full GMC registration.

This post holds educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean. If appointed as a Clinical Fellow this post will not be recognised for training.

OUT OF HOURS WORK

The post is on a partial shift pattern.

OCCASIONAL EMERGENCIES

The postholderaccepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies in unforeseen circumstances, at the request of clinical managers, in consultation where practicable with his/her colleagues both senior and junior.

TEACHING

Medical students from GlasgowUniversity are attached to the consultant psychiatrists on a 5 week clinical clerkship basis. The students receive teaching in both the hospital and community settings to enable as rounded an experience in psychiatry as possible. The postholder will be expected to participate in the teaching of medical students, as well as teaching students of other disciplines.

AUDIT /RESEARCH

The postholder would be encouraged to participate in audit / research

projects as appropriate.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Continuing Professional Development is encouraged, as is attendance at the fortnightly case conferences / journal clubs. The facilities of the medical libraries at Dykebar and the RoyalAlexandraHospital will be available. There is also an online library, which includes a literature search facility, to which all staff may have access. Advice on continuing postgraduate education and careers counselling is available from both the College Tutor and other senior staff.

An Educational Supervisor will be appointed.

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.
