Shutters Meet Refocused Demand for Authentic Exterior Design

With highly-styled exteriors the norm for today’s desirable new construction, authentic and fully functional shuttersprovide homes with traditional character signifying attention to detail.

Design aesthetics and total quality are increasingly important to homebuyers creating architecturally-correct, style-appropriate homes. One example is the encouragement of shutters by many of today’s influential architectsand developers.

Atlantic Premium Shutters are in the design guidelines for the New Urbanism communities of East Beach, Virginia and Alys Beach, Florida. These walkable luxury communities master-planned by Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company highlight interaction and traditional vibrant character.

While Atlantic Premium Shutters are specified for these new traditional communities, they are also largely used in historically-sensitive areas like Charleston, South Carolina, Ft. McHenry in Baltimore and New Orleans’ Holy Cross neighborhood.

“Atlantic Premium Shutters provide an absolute look of richness and quality for the individual house. That goes directly to my job which is to add value and hold value in our neighborhood for us as the developer, and for all of the property owners,” says Roger F. Wood, consulting town architect for East Beach.

“Our goal is to signify high quality down to the tiniest of details,” Wood adds. “People have the sense that it’s very refreshing to see something that looks and acts authentic - an operable shutterthat you can close in the event of a tough storm. The shutters fulfill a basic functional need to protect homes in this environment.”

Not lost on many homeowners is the shutters’ lowmaintenance. Atlantic’s ArchitecturalCollection Shutters, used throughout East Beach and Alys Beach, feature a limited lifetime warranty on both structural components and finish. Homeownersdo not have to sand, scrape or repaint the shutters.

The sized-to-order shutters are hand-assembled and hand-sanded, ensuring seamless construction for Raised Panel, Louvered Colonial, Board and Batten, Combination and Bahama style shutter designs.

“The functionality and architectural correctness of the shutters is extremely key, and their design is an integral part of the expression of our Bermuda-inspired design,” says Marieanne Khoury-Vogt, town architect in Alys Beach.

Atlantic’s scene-setting shutters will not crack, split or rot and are resistant to termites. Architectural Collection Shutters are manufactured with marine-grade fiberglass, proprietary composite wood and structural-grade PVC. Atlantic’s Classic Collection Shutters, crafted of proprietary composite wood, are available in Raised Panel, Faux Louver and Board and Batten styles. Readily available in typical window-scale sizes, Atlantic’s composite ProSeries Shutters come primed for contractors to quickly apply paint and enhance any exterior.

Architectural and Classic Collection Shutters are installed on East Beach’s Tidewater Colonial Revival, Tidewater Shingle and Tidewater Victorian guidebook architectural styles. Across the U.S., the shutters have graced Federal, Colonial, French Provincial, Shotgun and other architectural style homes.

Large windows can be accommodated with shutters available in heights up to 120” and widths to 36”. Coastal homeowners can select storm-rated shutter options that even meet Florida’s rigorous building codes.

Numerous design options allow homeowners to personalize their shutters, choosing elements like additional rails, arched tops, faux tilt rods, extra panels and rabbeted edges and beading.

Atlantic’s broad 40-color palette features dark choices such as Pewter, Midnight Sky and Garnet, along with lighter tones like Sand and Driftwood. Custom colors are available.

The shutters are complete with detailing on both the front and back. Most are mounted with historically correct, operable hardware of stainless steel with a matte-black coating. The traditional decorative hardware attractively sets the shutters off from the home. Atlantic Premium Shutters meet the Heritage Preservation Guidelines of Historic Landmark Buildings, as published by the National Park Service.

Atlantic’s Bahama shutters appeal to residents of coastal, tropical and desert environments, where the shutters allow soft breezes and diffused light to pass through. These durable shutters of pultruded fiberglass use salt spray-impervious aluminum hardware.
