2.03  IRRIGATION COMPONENTS AND/OR SYSTEMS

A.  Spray Bodies

1.  General Information

a.  Provide irrigation spray bodies as per the specification.

b.  The spray bodies shall be comprised of components as outlined in this specification in order to meet the hydraulic demands and flow requirements of the irrigation zones they service.

2.  Spray Bodies

a.  Irrigation spray body specifications include but are not limited to:

1)  Parts and components to withstand harsh operating conditions using chemically treated recycled water (reclaimed/non-potable), dirty water containing grit, debris, and other particulates, high operating pressures common in commercial irrigation and resistant to ultra-violet light.

2)  Parts and components resistant to corrosion in treated recycled water containing chlorine and other chemicals.

3)  Pressure-activated, co-molded seal composed of three wipers and a base seal to ensure a positive seal without excess “flow-by” which enables more heads to be installed on the same valve.

i)  Base seal provides a positive seal during operation and the three wiper seals serve to precisely balance flushing, flow-by, and debris protection to optimize performance and durability during pop-up.

ii)  Precision controlled flush at pop-down to clear debris from the unit, to assure positive stem retraction in all soil types.

iii)  Wiper seal material shall resist degradation caused by chlorine in reclaimed water.

iv)  Tertiary wiper shall respond as extra protection in case failure occurs to the primary wiper and shall be capable of sealing completely at 40psi (2.7 bar).

4)  Recessed debris pockets located in the base of the spray body to prevent recirculation of harmful debris during operation.

5)  Reinforced ratchet mechanism to allow easy nozzle pattern alignment without tools.

i)  Comprised of materials that are resilient to chemicals found in recycled water.

ii)  Prevents pattern misalignment over time.

6)  Shall include an internal check valve to prevent low head drainage of up to 14 feet (4.3 m); 6 psi (0.4 bar).

i)  Shall include markings printed on the top of the cap to indicate the spray body includes an internal check valve.

ii)  Sealing device shall be an integral part of the pop-up stem.

iii)  Shall be removable through the top of the spray body.

iv)  Shall seal against the downstream end of bottom inlet.

v)  Shall create no more than 1 psi (.07 bar) pressure drop at the maximum rated flow.

vi)  The internal check valve seal washer shall be made of EPDM rubber.

vii)  Includes a stronger retract spring to accommodate elevations changes up to 14 feet (4.3 m).

viii)  Prevents drainage from spray bodies at lower elevations.

ix)  Retains water in lateral pipes to reduce the wear on system components by minimizing water hammer during start-up.

7)  Shall include a 30 psi (2.0 bar) pressure regulating device to prevent high pressure fogging to the nozzle stream.

i)  Pressure regulating device shall be an integral part of the pop-up stem.

ii)  Pressure regulating device shall include a dust shroud cap separate from the flow tube to protect the pressure regulating device o-rings from contamination.

iii)  Pressure regulating device shall regulate nozzle pressure to 30 psi (2.0 bar) regardless of ascending, descending or fluctuating inlet pressure.

iv)  Shall be removable through the top of the spray body.

v)  Shall include markings printed on the top of the cap indicating the spray body includes an internal pressure regulating device.

vi)  The device shall regulate the nozzle pressure to 30 psi (2.0 bar) for inlet pressures ranging from 35 to 100 psi (2.4 to 6.9 bar).

vii)  Pressure below 35 psi (2.4 bar) shall not exceed a pressure loss of 6 psi (0.4 bar).

viii)  Prevents high pressure nozzle operation that causes water waste, overthrow, and detrimental performance.

8)  Shall include an internal device built into the stem to prevent water loss and alert maintenance when a spray nozzle is removed. Delivers a low-flow indicator stream/vertical water jet when a spray nozzle is removed.

i)  Shall provide +15’ (4.6 m) low-flow vertical water jet. Vertical water jet shall be visible from a clean line of sight of +200’ (61 m) when nozzle has been removed.

ii)  Low flow vertical water jet does not exceed 2 gpm (0.45 m3/h; 0.13 l/s), even with varying inlet pressure.

iii)  Shall include markings printed on the top of the cap indicating the spray body includes a low-flow indicator device.

iv)  Shall be an integral part of the pop-up stem.

v)  Height and low flow of vertical water jet shall cause water to dissipate during descent reducing puddles and run-off.

vi)  During nozzle removal, the in-stem flow shall cause the internal device to travel upstream and seal against the base of the nozzle threads limiting water loss and geysers of excessive flow.

vii)  The stream of water shall preserve system hydraulics in order to maintain proper operation throughout the irrigation cycle.

viii)  Provides protection against plant material loss due to water pooling and erosion.

ix)  Provides protection against nozzle removal going unnoticed.

x)  Pressure loss across the internal device shall not exceed 1 psi (.07 bar) across operating range.

xi)  Shall reduce the potential of incurring fines as a result of excessive run-off when nozzle has been removed.

9)  12” (30.5 cm) pop-up spray body.

10)  Operating range of 2.5 to 24 feet (0.8 to 7.3m).

11)  Operating pressure range of 15 to 100 psi (1.0 to 6.9 bar).

12)  Exposed surface diameter shall measure 2 1/4“ (5.7 cm).

13)  Flow by rating of 0 at 15 psi (1.0 bar) or greater, 0.5 gpm (0.1 m3/h; 0.03 l/s) otherwise.

14)  Shall include ½” (15/21) NPT female threaded bottom inlet.

15)  All spray body components shall be removable from the top without special tools in order to provide quick and easy flushing and maintenance of the sprinkler.

16)  The spray body, stem, nozzle, and screen shall be constructed of heavy-duty and ultra-violet resistant plastic.

17)  It shall have a heavy-duty stainless steel retract spring for positive pop-down.

18)  The spray body shall have a pre-installed Pop-Top Flush Plug.

i)  The plug shall prevent debris from clogging the sprinkler during installation and allow for the system to be flushed before nozzling.

ii)  The plug shall be bright orange in color and constructed of polypropylene material.

19)  Shall include a five-year trade warranty.
