Context
Arthritis is the biggest cause of pain and disability in the UK – affecting more than one in six people of all ages, many of whom live with long-term, chronic pain. For nearly 80 years, Arthritis Research UK has been striving to do something about the devastating impact of arthritis on so many lives. It is the only charity in Britain solely dedicated to funding research into arthritis in all its forms and it is also the biggest charitable funder of arthritis research in Europe. The charity’s aspirational vision is a future free from arthritis and everything we do aims to take the pain away from people with arthritis and enable them to remain active, doing the things they love.
Arthritis Research UK depends entirely on public support and the generosity of its donors. Approximately three quarters of the charity’s funding comes from legacy income and its intellectual property rights. A key goal for the fundraising team is to successfully diversify the income streams of the charity and reduce its reliance on these two sources of income. Dedicated supporters and donors are at the heart of the charity, with over 200 fundraising branches, a growing number of community fundraising supporters and an increasing number of regular givers.
The last four years have seen organisational transformation into an efficient modern charity with an aspirational vision. An ambitious fundraising strategy to significantly grow net income has been launched which requires significant growth from the income lines that make up the Events and Community Fundraising department.
The Community Fundraising team proactively develops and supports a wide and varied range of fundraising activity taking place in local communities. From large scale community events (e.g. local galas) to fundraising activity organised by our volunteer branch network, working with community groups and clubs, coffee mornings and bucket collections. The team also supports the wider fundraising directorate signposting supporters to relevant teams.
Main purpose of the role
The two Community Fundraising Assistants are accountable for supporting the Community Fundraising team with administrative tasks as well as managing a portfolio of individual community fundraising supporters and some of our network of branch volunteers, providing first class encouragement, ideas and support.
