Education Strategy InEssence

Aim

To deliver education that contributes to the achievement of the University’s mission to ‘help shape the future by extending the boundaries of knowledge for the benefit of individuals, society and the environment’.

This will be delivered through programmes that:

  1. provide a mechanism for the delivery of high quality, inspirationalresearch-led, cutting edge education by excellent,well-trained and supported staff;
  2. attract and retain high ability, ambitious and engaged students;
  3. result in a diaspora of excellent graduates who help shape the future and whose success further enhances the reputation of the university;
  4. are cost-effective to deliver.

In order to achieve this, those responsible for education will:

a)Develop and deliver an action plan with respect to the University Education Strategy to promote continual improvement in relation to 1-3 above;

b)Promote, identify and recommend reward for educational excellence;

c)Undertake quality assurance process in relation to programmes and modules;

d)Evaluate, revise and withdraw programmes in the context of demands 1-4 above;

e)Develop new programmes within disciplines, within the College and across the University that meet demands 1-4 above;

f)Contribute to planning and budgeting through assessment of programme demand; planning of workload; estimationof non-pay resource requirements;

g)Ensure that learning resources meet student and staff expectations and are fit for the experience and delivery of our education programmes.

Organisation & Leadership

  1. Education will be lead by the Associate Dean for Education (ADE) and Assistant College Manager Education (ACME) working closely with the Education Strategy Group
  2. ESG will own, develop, update and monitor 3 key documents: the Education Strategy Action Plan; The Education Portfolio & Plan; The Education Business Plan.
  3. ESG will be supported with respect to the Education Strategy Action Plan (ESAP) by Discipline Education Committees and by ESG advisory & action groups that for 2011/12 will be: Admissions & WP; Employability; Exchanges & SACA; Learning resources; Technology-Enabled Learning.
  4. ESG will be supported with respect to the Education Portfolio & Plan (EPP) by Discipline Education Committees and by: (1) Comprehensive Annual Programme Monitoring (COMAPM); (2) Termly meetings of the Programme & Module Development Group (PROGDEV).
  5. ESG will contribute to College Business Planning (including KPI & Risk Register monitoring) through the development of the Education Business Plan (EBP), informed by the EPP and the ESAP.
  6. The CLES Education Forum will be established to promote educational excellence and the sharing of best practice – all members of CLES are invited to engage in, present during, and lead Forum activities.

  • Monitor & promote progress in implementation of ESAP, including receipt & evaluation of reports from, and identification of actions for:

  • Development, review & implementation of Education Portfolio & Plan (EPP)
  • Receive synthesis from COMAPM
  • Approve responses to T Faculty
  • Revise & Deliver through Progdev
  • Annual Development of Education Business Plan (EBP): Student numbers; non-pay Budgets; staffing demands; strategic initiatives; commentary re KPIs
  • Determine Responses to Changing External Circumstances & necessary revisions to ESAP, EBP & EPP
  • Develop & promote implementation of other College Education Policies & Strategies as required by Taught Faculty

ESG Advisory & Action groups

The purpose of the AAGs is to lead in the following thematic areas by: advising ESG regarding initiatives/investment; fostering and driving activity, including college-wide or campus-wide initiatives; promoting close working relationships with central professional and academic services and University-wide groups, CATs etc; developing elements of the College Education Action Plans.

College Coordinators are identified for each group in order to ensure that there is a ‘first amongst equals’ to call and chair meetings. Assistance in scheduling meetings will be provided by the College Administrators in the disciplines. Each AAG should elect a secretary for each meeting to keep a record of action points and minutes where necessary. It is expected that the role of secretary should rotate to ensure that all participants can engage in discussion.
