Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps

Organization Summary:

The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps is a program through the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment as was established 20 years ago. Their mandate is to provide youth between the ages of 17 and 24 with employment opportunities in the environmental field while simultaneously providing services to the communities of the province that they work in. The NSYCC wants to help youth in NS develop skills for life-long learning which include team-building and leadership, knowledge for future employment, and the ability to give back to their community and environment.

There are a number of ways that the NSYCC can help you get involved with the environment and your community:

Regular Summer Program:

Students can apply to work in a crew of 2-4 individuals from late June until early August with local community partners. This will provide you with training in the environmental field and give you valuable experience working on a potentially wide range of projects such as watershed restoration, community outreach, and species monitoring to name a few. The ‘Empower!’ program was actually created by 2 crew members working at the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute in the summer of 2009.

Environmental Leadership Program (ELP):

Interested in traveling the world and learning about environmental issues abroad? With the ELP you can get hands-on experience working with environmental education at the community level and development activities both overseas and abroad. The program is intended for youth between the ages of 19 and 25 and runs only when proper funding is available.

EN-Vision

Do you want to get involved with the environment but aren’t interested in any of the projects that are currently taking place? Then why not create your own project! EN-Vision recognizes that youth have great ideas for projects and sometimes they just that extra bit of help of make it happen. The NYSCC may provide up to $5000 in funding for your project to help you get it rolling!
