Classroom Behavior/Good Choices

Dear Parents,

I will be using several behavior management plans. Two of the plans will focus on the individual student and one will focus on the class as a whole.

In addition to our school wide Code of Conduct, the students came up with some general classroom guidelines that we feel will createa classroom environment that fosters learning.

Code of Conduct:

  • We are respectful.
  • We are responsible.
  • We are caring.
  • We are safe.
  • We have integrity.
  • We follow our rules about bullying.

General Classroom Guidelines (student ideas):

  • be nice/helpful
  • never give up
  • be a good listener
  • stay on task
  • try your best
  • follow directions
  • treat people and things with respect
  • hands and feet to yourself-stay in your own personal bubble
  • do not throw items or break things
  • raise your hand and wait to be called on
  • no running around

Individual Student Behavior:

*Name Clips:

Students will have their name on a clothes pin that will be at the “Ready to Learn” position each day. If the student is not making good choices, following the classroom guidelines or following the school Code of Conduct, they will move their clip downto the next color.

There are three colors with consequences:

Yellow: (Think about it)- Students have a chance to think about their

behavior and what they need to do to make better choices. They will miss some recess or walk during recess.

Orange: (Teacher Choice) Students will complete a “Think Sheet” over recess and write an apology if necessary.

Red:(Parent Contact) Students may miss more recess to complete a “think sheet” and/or conference with the teacher about his/her behavior. Parents will be sent a copy of the completed “Think Sheet” to complete, sign and return to the teacher the next school day. A misconduct form may be completed and sent to the Principal depending on the severity of the incident. Teacher may contact parent via email or phone too.

Parents/Principal will be informed of the student behavior. A behavior plan may be implemented if necessary.

Note: Students will be responsible forrecording why they had to move their clip in a Behavior Tracking folder.

Your child will also circle one of the following on their homework charts:

= Your child did a great job at following our school Code of Conduct.

Y = Think About It

O = Teacher’s Choice

R = Parent Contact

*Tickets:

Students will have the opportunity during the day to earn tickets.

They can earn tickets for:

  • making good choices/following the Code of Conduct
  • being “spotted” doing something nice/kind
  • helping others
  • being a Bully Buster
  • being a good worker/listener
  • showing extra effort/improvement
  • writing neatly

When a student earns a ticket they write their name on the ticket and drop it in a container. At the beginning of each day, a number from 1 to 6 will be chosen at random. This will be the numberof tickets pulledat the end of the day. The last day of the week is “double day” which means that whatever number was rolled in the morning is doubled and I pull out that many ticket winners. If a student has their name drawn, they get to pick from the prize bin. If a ticket does not get pulled, it will stay in the container for the next day’s drawing. Tickets not pulled on the last day of the week will be emptied and the process will begin over again at the beginning of the next week.

Whole Class Behavior:

Class Bingo Chart:

There is a “bingo” behavior chart posted in the classroom. It has 5 rows with 5 numbers in each row. The numbers go from 1-25. If the whole class has made good choices a “bingo ball” is pulled from a container. The number on the ball is located on the bingo chart and turned over. When the chart shows five in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) the class will celebrate.

Possible celebration ideas:

  • extra recess
  • game time
  • arts & crafts
  • movie
  • special snack
  • computer lab time
  • chewing gum in class
  • bring a stuffed animal to school

If you have any questions about these plans feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Karen Melvin
