INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING FOR CITIZENSHIP THROUGH MARRIAGE
The foreign spouse of an Italian citizen residing abroad is eligible to apply for Italian citizenship after three years of marriage (this period is reduced to 18months in the presence of children under 18).
The Italian spouse must reside in the jurisdiction of this Consulate General and be registered in the AIRE. At the time of application, the marriage must be registered in Italy, with the competent Municipality.At the date of the swearing in of the applicant as an Italian citizen, which occurs at the end of a processing period of 730 days, the marital union must be in effect (with no separation or divorce. Applications for citizenship through marriage are to be submitted online. The applicant should proceed as follows:
1)Create an account on the website of the Italian Ministry of Internal Affairs using his/her personal details exactly as reported on the certificate of birth (married women must use their maiden name). In case of an error in the information entered, it will be necessary to delete the account and create a new account. Please note that the website is in Italian only.
2)Follow the links to the section “CITTADINANZA”to view the options:
a)Gestione Domanda (Manage your application)

d)Comunicazioni (Messages)
3)Click on “Gestione Domanda” and use the form “Modello AE –Cittadini stranieri residenti all’estero – Art. 5 – richiesta per matrimonio con cittadino italiano –“
Complete the form in its entirety and upload the four required documents in PDF format(these should already be legalised and translated in Italian by the competent authorities);
a)“Estratto di nascita del Paese di origine”– Long form /RegistrationPhotocopy of Birth duly legalised and translated (refer to the Vital Statistics page of our website for more information);
b)“Certificato penale del Paese di origine ed eventuali Paesidovesièvissuti” – Police certificate from the country of origin, and any other country in which the applicant has resided. Said certificates must be translated into Italian and validated by the Italian Embassy or Consulate of the country in which they were issued;
c)“Copia di un documento di riconoscimento” – Scanned copy of the applicant’scurrent picture ID;
d)“Ricevuta del versamento di 200 Euro” – Proof of payment of 200 Euro viabank transfer to:

After the application has been uploaded, the system will provide a summary of the information submitted and a receipt with a file number, which will appear as “id. Domanda”.The online system will notifyour Citizenship office that an application by an individual residing in its jurisdiction has been uploaded. The Citizenship office will review the file and:
1)Accept the application
2)Refuse the application
3)Conditionally accept the application
From the date the application is accepted, a new file number beginning with K10/C/ is issued, andthe processing period of 730 days begins. If the application is conditionally accepted due to missing or incomplete documentation, the applicant will be contacted by the Citizenship Office. The applicationmust be correctly uploaded and the application mustreceive confirmation by our officein order forthe processing period to begin.
The Citizenship Office will contact the applicant for an appointment to present the originals (as per letters a,b,c and d of previous point 3). At this time the following documents are also required in original:
e)”Estratto dell’ Atto di matrimonio” – A certificate issued by the competent Municipality(for a contact list refer to confirming that the marriage has been registered;
f)Affidavit, in Italian or in English with a corresponding translation,in which the applicant lists all family members residing in his/her home, current address as well as all previous addresses since turning 14 years of age, declares to have nocriminal record, and declares that the marital union is still in effect.
g)Additional payment of consular fee (art. 24) is to be paid in $CAD cash, as per the current rate indicated on our website(refer to FormsConsular fees).
Once the Consulate General has verified and confirmed thedocumentation,the processing of the application falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. At the successful conclusion of the processing period, the latter authority will issue a Decree of citizenship that is formally notified to the applicant.The applicant will have six months, from the date of receipt of the Decree, to appear in the offices of the Consulate General to take the citizenship oath and swear allegiance to the Republic. The citizenship will become effective on the day following the swearing in ceremony. It is advised that the Consulate General be informed of any address change in order to avoid delays in the receipt of the Decree.Applicants can also log in and verify the status of their application online (via “Visualizza Stato della Domanda”).
Legalisation and Translation of Documents
Before uploading the application online via the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the long-form birth document and police certificates must be legalised by the Italian Consular authority in the Country of issue, and translated into Italian (refer to a list of translators). Applicants who are citizens of the EU can submit a “self-certification” in lieu of a police certificate.
This Consulate General is competent for the legalisation of:
1) Certificates of birth in Registration Photocopy of Birthformat issued in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Yukon (applicable consular fees for legalisation and certification of the translation are art. 7 and art. 5a).
2) Canadian Criminal Record Check issued by the RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa. Apply for a Certified Criminal Record Check with Fingerprints, which will contain the digital fingerprints of the applicant. (Applicable consular fees for the legalisation and certification of translation are art. 69 and art. 72a)
Applicants may request the legalisation service in person or by mail, by submitting a request form, and payment in $CAD (current fees are listed on our website at FormsConsular fees) in cash or via money ordermade out to the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver. If submitting the request by mail, please include alsoa prepaid envelope for the return shipping.
