Local Authority Governor Criteria Form
In May 2014 the DfE announced that all governing bodies must reconstitute under the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012 by September 2015. These regulations state that governing bodies must only have one LA governor.
The DfE Statutory Guidance (May 2014) states:
“Local authority governors are nominated by the local authority but appointed by the governing body. The local authority can nominate any eligible person as a local authority governor, but it is for the governing body to decide whether their nominee has the skills to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school and meets any other eligibility criteria they have set. Local authorities should therefore make every effort to understand the governing body’s requirements and identify and nominate suitable candidates.”
Previously, the LA appointed LA governors. However, the headteacher and chair of governors always provided their input about the suitability of candidates, who would meet them as part of the selection process.
In order to ensure that suitable candidates approach the school, we would be grateful if you could provide the details of the key skills required by the governing body. The details provided within this statement will be included with the schools details on the website and therefore would be grateful if your statement did not exceed 100 words.
It is recommended that the governing body complete a skills audit (models are available from the Governor Support Team) in order to assess the strengths, weaknesses and skills most needed by the Governing Body.
Skills required / How will this benefit the Governing bodyPlease provide copies of relevant minutes which record and confirm that the skills audit has taken place. Copies of all documents will be kept by Governor Support Team for future reference.
Completed forms and any evidence should be returned to
