Act as lead in directing and/or giving instruction to a crew of Tree Maintenance Workers engaged in trimming, shaping, cultivating, removing, and planting trees in state facilities, in parks or other natural areas in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Assign the use of vehicles and/or equipment including aerial equipment and hydraulic tools used in tree maintenance work in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Maintain safe operations and control traffic when removing and/or maintaining large trees by securing hazardous areas using barricades, safety tape, cones and/or signs, etc., to ensure safety in accordance with the department and/or Cal-OSHA standards, policies and/or guidelines for public/tenant/employee health and/or safety.
Report tree maintenance concerns and/or issues to the supervisor using appropriate methods (i.e., verbally, computer generated messaging, etc.) as directed under departmental policies and/or guidelines.
Oversee and instruct tree maintenance crew on proper work procedures (bending, lifting, use of chemical solutions, machine operation, etc.) to ensure safe working conditions and prevent job-related accidents in accordance with established departmental Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for employee health and/or safety.
Prepare chemical solutions for proper usage, safety and performance using a measuring device or mixing station in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and established departmental and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for building preservation and/or public/tenant/employee health and/or safety.
Communicate verbally and/or in writing regarding daily work assignments and/or procedures (i.e., as informal notes from supervisors or tenants, memos, check-lists, etc.) with first line supervision to ensure understanding of work to be performed according to departmental standards, policies, and/or guidelines.
Read written directions for preparing, storing, and/or using chemicals used to perform assigned work tasks according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Read policies and/or procedures regarding ladder safety, equipment safety, hearing conservation practices, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, use of materials for chemical fluid cleanup and other substances to ensure performance of safe work practices in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and established departmental IIPP and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for building preservation and/or public/tenant/employee health and/or safety.
Prepare forms (such as work orders, incident reports, timesheets, etc.) to document work activities in order to report work related incidents in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Attend and/or conduct safety meetings, training and/or job-related activities for better understanding of job performance and upward mobility as mandated by departmental and/or Cal-OSHA standards, policies and/or guidelines for building preservation and/or public/tenant/employee health and/or safety.
Read Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and product labeling to ascertain information about chemicals (i.e., exposures, flammability’s, flash-points, interactions with other chemicals, etc.) used in daily tree maintenance assignments in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and established departmental and/or Cal-OSHA standards, policies and guidelines for building preservation and/or public/tenant/employee health and/or safety.
Cable, brace, tie, bolt, stake and/or guy trees and branches to provide support using various tools and/or equipment (i.e., gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hardhat, climbing hooks, climbing saddles, ropes, ladders, boom truck, chipper truck,, screw drivers, pliers, hammers, hand drills, power drills, cable cutters, come-along, etc. ) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation to mitigate any potential hazard(s) and/or provide a healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Clean, sharpen, and lubricate tools and equipment using various tools, chemicals, and/or equipment (i.e., oils, degreasers, disinfectants, scrapers, files, air compressors, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hardhat, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Clear sites, streets, and grounds of woody and herbaceous materials such as brush, weeds, fallen trees and limbs using various tools, chemicals, and/or equipment (i.e., trucks, tractor, motorized debris rake, chippers, chainsaws, pole pruners, pole saws, loppers, shears, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, rakes, shovels, pitchforks, wheelbarrows, brooms, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hardhat, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Climb trees, rope climb, climb ladders to gain access using various tools and/or equipment (i.e., gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hardhat, climbing saddles, climbing hooks, belts, ropes, ladders, boom truck, chipper truck,, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Cut away dead and excess branches from trees, clear vegetation using various tools and/or equipment (i.e., gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hardhat, climbing saddles, climbing hooks, belts, ropes, ladders, boom truck, chipper truck,, chain saws, hand saws, pole saws, pole pruners, loppers, shears, hedge trimmers, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Hoist tools and equipment to tree trimmers and lower branches using various tools and/or equipment (i.e., ropes, pulleys, lowering devices, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Visually inspect trees and/or vegetation to determine if they have diseases, pest and/or structural deficiencies in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Load debris and refuse onto trucks and haul it away for disposal using various tools and/or equipment (i.e., shovel, tractor, pitchforks, forklifts, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Spray trees and fertilize, treat disease or for pest control that includes mixing chemicals and calibrating spray equipment using various tools, chemicals, and/or equipment (i.e., gloves, goggles, face shields, coveralls, rubber boots, spray gun, spray hose, pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Transplant and move trees and shrubs and prepare trees for moving using various tools, chemicals, and/or equipment (i.e., tree spade, shovels, backhoe, boom crane, anti-transpirant, hammer, burlap, rope, slings, chains, loppers, cable cutters, wrenches, pick-axe, Pulaski, water hose, gloves, eye protection, hard hat, boots, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Prune and/or shape trees to achieve attractive shapes using various tools and/or equipment (i.e., gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hardhat, climbing saddles, climbing hooks, belts, ropes, ladders, boom truck, chipper truck,, shears, loppers, chain saws, pole pruners, pole saws, hand saws, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Attend training in the handling of hazardous materials and use of environmental safeguards in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
Monitor worksites to identify and remedy potential safety hazards in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.

Remove unwanted trees using proper felling techniques (e.g., notch and back-cuts, setting safety parameters on the ground, etc.) using various tools and/or equipment (i.e., gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hardhat, climbing saddles, climbing hooks, belts, ropes, ladders, boom truck, chipper truck, ropes, wedges, sledge hammers, shears, loppers, chain saws, pole pruners, pole saws, hand saws, lowering devices, pulleys, etc.) in order to maintain proper esthetics, healthy growth of vegetation and a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public in accordance with local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, Governor’s Executive orders, established departmental, BOMA and/or Cal-OSHA standards and policies for the preservation and beautification of trees and plants on state-owned properties.
