CLASS TITLE: SPEECH AND HEARING THERAPIST

This is work conducting speech and hearing therapy.

  • Administers articulation, voice rhythm, hearing, and language examinations.
  • Conducts diagnostic evaluations of a variety of speech and hearing problems and disorders and makes recommendations for the development of special therapy programs to improve the communication skills of students and patients.
  • Organizes and conducts group and individual therapeutic sessions utilizing a variety of speech and hearing equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains testing, evaluation, and progress records for participants in the speech and hearing therapy program.
  • Installs and maintains speech and hearing testing and therapy equipment such as tape recorders, hearing audiometers, and language masters and augmentative communicating devices.
  • Prepares written reports of patients and students receiving therapy treatments.
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Knowledge of speech and hearing defects.
  • Knowledge of the classifications, causes, and manifestations of speech defects.
  • Knowledge of the procedures used in the rehabilitation of speech and hearing disorders.
  • Knowledge of speech and hearing therapy methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of normal speech, language, and hearing development.
  • Knowledge of differential diagnosis of speech, language, and hearing disorders.
  • Skill in operating a variety of speech and hearing equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose language, speech, and hearing problems.
  • Ability to use nonverbal communications.
  • Ability to evaluate a variety of speech and hearing problems and disorders.
  • Ability to conduct group and individual speech and hearing therapy sessions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a certificate to practice speech pathology and audiology in accordance with Florida Statute 468; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in speech and hearing pathology and possession of the certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology and/or audiology from the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association.
