CLASS TITLE:SIGN/UPHOLSTERER TECHNICIAN

This is work manufacturing highway, traffic and informational signs or repairing upholstered furniture and/or replacing or repairing draperies.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Lays out and cuts stencils for highway regulatory and informational signs.
  • Cuts out letters and symbols used on reflectorized signs.
  • Builds and repairs silk screens.
  • Manufactures signs by silk screen process.
  • Lays out and applies cut-out letters, symbols, and shields by hand on signs not silk screened.
  • Letters by hand signs not silk screened.
  • Lays out and engraves laminated plastic and aluminum signs.
  • Manufactures and prepares sign blanks.
  • Packs signs for shipment.
  • Assists in the maintenance and care of sign shop and equipment.
  • Performs stock cuttings, cover sewing, hair filling, and tufting in the repair of upholstered furniture.
  • Sews tears or rips with a needle and thread.
  • Cuts new coverings from a bolt of cloth, using part removed as pattern.
  • Tacks, sews, or staples replacement upholstery to frame.
  • Repairs draperies by mending, reweaving, sewing, patching, or other appropriate means.
  • Cleans and maintains upholstering equipment and materials.
  • Refinishs wood or metal furniture.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the techniques and equipment used in the manufacture and repair of signs or in the repair of furniture or draperies.
  • Skill in using sewing machines or equipment used in manufacturing signs.
  • Ability to mend or repair signs, furniture or draperies.
  • Ability to layout and cut stencils or patterns.
  • Ability to clean and maintain materials and equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience in the manufacture and repair of signs or in upholstery work; or
  • One year of experience in the manufacturing and repair of highway signs.
