CLASS TITLE:SENIOR RESIDENTIAL INSTRUCTOR

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work requiring the proficient use of manual communication and/or mobility and orientation skills in providing instructive care and/or general care to students at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Instructs children in the development of proper eating, dressing, grooming, and related social habits.
  • Accounts for children assigned to residential units.
  • Ensures children obtain permission to leave the unit and reports their return.
  • Ensures health and sanitary conditions are maintained.
  • Renders first aid in cases of accident or illness.
  • Administers medication when instructed by infirmary staff and notifies appropriate personnel in emergencies.
  • Ensures the laundering and return of clothing, sheets, and towels.
  • Mends clothing.
  • Establishes good study habits and encourages scholastic achievement.
  • Promotes the development of decision making, sportsmanship, leadership, independence, and general self-reliance.
  • Prepares and revises an individual education plan for each child.
  • Plans, instructs, and conducts recreational and leisure time activities; escorts children to church and other appropriate activities.
  • Prepares daily chronicles.
  • Ensures students report for all scheduled medical appointments punctually.
  • Ensures security of building.
  • Evacuates building in case of emergency utilizing established procedures.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma, or its equivalent, completion of the Department of Education Course V200210 - Early Childhood Education Certification and one (1) year of experience in working with deaf and/or blind children. Additionally, Senior Residential Instructor positions working with deaf children at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) must complete a Signed Communication Proficiency Interview Minimum Qualifications (SCPI) and attain a sign language rating of "Advanced".
