CLASS TITLE:SENIOR CHAPLAIN - F/C

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work administering a religious services program in a correctional or forensic facility or institution when there are less than three (3) Chaplains assigned. The employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this class must spend a minimum of 75 percent of their time performing duties which involve contact with patients/inmates in a correctional or forensic facility or institution.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Administers and/or conducts a variety of religious services or devotions such as bible or other sacred text study courses, confessions, baptisms, communions, and anointing of the sick.
  • Coordinates the work of other chaplains to ensure maximum utilization of time and resources.
  • Interviews and counsels patients, inmates, residents or other individuals on a variety of subject matters.
  • Visits sick patients, inmates or other individuals.
  • Coordinates activities of inmates, patients, residents or other individuals.
  • Recruits, trains and coordinates activities of religious citizen volunteers.
  • Plans, develops, and participates in conferences designed to inform and involve community clergy.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of theological theories, philosophies and systems.
  • Knowledge of counseling and interviewing techniques.
  • Ability to conduct a variety of religious services and activities.
  • Ability to provide counseling or guidance to others.
  • Ability to conduct fact-finding interviews.
  • Ability to supervise people.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in theology, religion, education, or one of the social or behavioral sciences, or education or graduation from a seminary or school of theology and;
  • Ordination, or investment officially with ministerial or priestly authority by an ecclesiastical body and;
  • A current written approbation or endorsement by the appropriate official of the ecclesiastical body and;
  • Two years of experience in conducting religious services or in providing counseling or guidance relating to the ministry.
