CLASS TITLE:LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS INSPECTOR

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is inspection work ensuring pipeline safety, safe storage, transportation and utilization of liquefied petroleum gas is in compliance with state and federal laws, regulations and codes.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Inspects bulk plants and facilities which store and handle liquefied petroleum gas; approves plans for the design and engineering of storage facilities and inspects plant sites while under construction; inspects liquefied petroleum gas tank trucks, transport vehicles, railroad tank car facilities, distribution systems, and liquefied petroleum gas equipment.
  • Examines the records of liquefied petroleum gas pipeline companies to determine that the design, installation and operation of the system conforms to safety requirements.
  • Uses specialized instruments to determine whether or not pipeline systems are under cathodic protection.
  • Reviews the operation and maintenance plans of all operators and approves these plans or recommends changes.
  • Investigates reported accidents and alleged violations of state and federal laws related to the storage and use of liquefied petroleum gas.
  • Provides technical advice to local authorities for establishing ordinances relating to liquefied petroleum gas safety.
  • Maintains records and statistical data on pipeline systems and other facilities as needed.
  • Interprets state laws, regulations and codes relating to handling, storage and use of liquefied petroleum gas and pipeline systems.
  • Attends hearings or trials as a witness in alleged violations of liquefied petroleum gas laws, rules or regulations.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in storing, handling or utilizing liquefied petroleum gas.
  • Knowledge of liquefied petroleum gas pipeline systems and safety requirements.
  • Ability to examine liquefied petroleum gas pipeline systems for compliance with safety requirements of applicable codes, laws and regulations.
  • Ability to conduct inspections to ensure safe storage, transportation and utilization of liquefied petroleum gas.
  • Ability to collect, review and verify data relating to liquid petroleum gas inspections.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to liquid petroleum gas inspections.
  • Ability to maintain records relating to liquefied petroleum gas pipeline systems.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in engineering or one of the physical sciences and two years of experience involving liquefied petroleum gas storage, utilization, handling or pipeline systems.
  • Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
