CLASS TITLE:CORRECTIONAL PROBATION SUPERVISOR

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is professional work supervising the operation of a small or medium-sized probation and parole office, or a unit of officers within a probation and parole office. The primary duty of employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of time communicating, training, evaluating, planning, and directing work; and having the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, promote, discharge, or discipline subordinate employees.

  • Directs employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed.
  • Conducts investigations.
  • Counsels offenders and refers them to specialized treatment.
  • Trains employees.
  • Discusses and answers questions from the court and other entities.
  • Monitors and provides technical assistance to officers in counseling and supervising offenders.
  • Monitors investigation of cases referred by the courts and other entities.
  • Assigns cases and reviews investigations made by officers.
  • Oversees compliance with American Correctional Association Accreditation.
  • Serves as liaison between the Department and other entities.
  • Responds to telephone calls, offender requests, and correspondence.
  • Supervises the offender assignment activities.
  • Assists in offender orientation.
  • Evaluates risk factors for placement of offenders.
  • Conducts case audits of officers' caseloads with follow-up audits to ensure compliance with department rules and standards.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of probation and parole and/or offender classification functions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques for advising, interviewing and counseling offenders.
  • Ability to assist offenders in solving problems.
  • Ability to work independently and/or under stressful conditions.
  • Ability describe facts and events accurately, review and analyze data and prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to conduct investigations.
  • Ability to apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in probation and parole, or in custody and care, classification or counseling of inmates; one year of which must have been at the professional level in probation and parole or classification.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in an area of criminal justice or in one of the social or behavioral sciences can substitute for one year of non-professional experience as described above.
  • In addition to the above, Florida Statute 943 requires that any person employed in this class must meet the following minimum standards:
  • (1)Be at least 19 years of age.
  • (2)Be a citizen of the United States, notwithstanding any laws of the State to the contrary.
  • (3)Be a high school graduate or its "equivalent" as the term may be determined by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission of the Department of Law Enforcement.
  • Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, nor have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or is found guilty of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.
  • (5)Have his/her processed fingerprints on file with the employing agency.
  • (6)Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician, based on specifications established by the Commission.
  • (7)Have a good moral character as determined by a background investigation under procedures established by the Commission.
  • (8)Have completed the basic recruit training course for Correctional Probation Officers and be eligible for, or possess a current employment certificate of compliance for Correctional Probation Officers issued by the Criminal Justice Standards an Training Commission.
