PRISON OFFICER

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals to fill nine (9) vacant positions of Prison Officer in the Prison Department of the Anguilla Public Service.

The post is in Grade H with a starting salary of EC $57,120.00 per annum.

The key duties of the post are:

  1. Receive warrants and take into custody mentally ill patients and prisoners for criminal or civil convictions.
  1. Search all prisoners entering or leaving the prison.
  1. Supervise prisoners on indoor or outdoor work assignments, recreation, religious services and educational activities.
  1. Lock and unlock prisoners’ cellsat prescribed times.
  1. Inspect all locks, bars, bolts, fencing and security appliances to ensure compliance with prison regulations, procedures and practices.
  1. Ensure the safekeeping and custody of prison keys and equipment.
  1. Screen visitors and articles entering and leaving the prison.
  1. Supervise prisoners at meal times and ablutions.
  1. Supervise prisoners taken to medical and health facilities to ensure the safety of the inmate and the general public from violent acts.
  1. Facilitate meaningful communication between prisoners and family members in keeping with the Prison policies, rules and regulations.
  1. Dispense medication properly to prisoners as required and ensure that they maintain proper standards of personal hygiene.
  1. Ensure the protection of life and property in the event of uprisings, disturbances, natural disasters or other emergencies.
  1. Maintain daily Log Book and Occurrence Diary.
  1. Attend all parades, meetings, and training sessions apart from normal duties as directed by the Prison Superintendent or any other Officer acting on his behalf.
  1. Deal professionally with aggressive and violent prisoners, their relatives or the general public.
  1. Ensure that all inmates and visitors to the establishment comply with the Prison rules and procedures.
  1. Take necessary measures to ensure the safety of staff and general public during the escort of violent and aggressive prisoners.
  1. Prevent the ill treatment of mentally ill and other vulnerable inmates.
  1. Participate in disaster management activities designed to prepare for, mitigate against and respond to disaster events.
  1. Strive consistently to provide excellence in customer service in the public sector.
  1. Perform other related duties as required by the job function.

Qualifications:

Minimum entry requirements of three (3) CXC passes or equivalent. Applicants who do not have the minimum entry requirements but present evidence of having completed secondary education or having three (3) years’ experience in a similar or related job may also be considered. Training in custodial and security management will be an asset.

Prison Officers are sometimes required to perform physically demanding tasks as part of their duties. It is essential that they possess a standard of physical fitness that enables them to perform these physical tasks professionally, and without the risk of injury, when the need arises. It is for this reason that minimum standards of physical fitness must be achieved and maintained. Applicants will be required to pass a fitness test as part of the selection procedure.
