CLASS TITLE:ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD ASSISTANT

This is skilled archaeological work in salvage and exploration activities and in field survey, excavation and laboratory analysis.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Controls salvage operations by ensuring that contractors follow the conditions set forth in the state contract.
  • Investigates suspected unauthorized salvage operations and reports suspected activities in violation of state's rights.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports and inventory lists on salvaged artifacts as to their description and other pertinent data.
  • Dives underwater to perform investigations.
  • Performs underwater rigging to ensure that recoverable items are not damaged.
  • Assists various law enforcement authorities when they require the service of an underwater diver.
  • Operates motorboat used in diving operations.
  • Lays out archaeological site grid.
  • Measures distance and elevation and prepares topographic maps.
  • Uses standard archaeological excavation techniques to remove soil and collect specimens.
  • Prepares profile and plan drawings of archaeological features and excavation units.
  • Keeps accurate and comprehensive field notes.
  • Assists in photography at archaeological sites.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in good order.
  • Participates in terrestrial and underwater archaeological surveys involving off-road vehicles, boats and other equipment.
  • Washes and catalogues artifacts.
  • Rough sorts excavation samples for further analysis.
  • Maintains accurate laboratory and accession records.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of scuba diving techniques or archaeological survey, excavation and laboratory methods.
  • Skill in the operation of motorboats or off-road vehicles and related equipment.
  • Ability to prepare underwater or terrestrial plans, profiles and drawings.
  • Ability to examine and evaluate the condition of artifacts.
  • Ability to describe facts and events accurately.
  • Ability to probe and obtain critical facts.
  • Ability to conduct underwater or terrestrial investigations.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a training program in scuba diving techniques and one year (or 30 hours) of scuba diving experience; or
  • One year of archaeological field experience; or
  • Completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of college coursework which includes two courses in anthropology or archaeology.
