CLASS TITLE:AGRICULTURAL TECHNICIAN II

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work performing a variety of procedures and techniques in an agricultural or animal science program including sub-professional veterinary care on experimental animals; recording and analyzing experimental data; and maintaining and operating farm machinery, trucks, and assorted equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Performs a variety of procedures in field or greenhouse experiments involving planting, fertilizing, cross pollinating, obtaining samples, and harvesting plants and crops.
  • Transplants, graphs, propagates and treats plants of all types and varieties within project guidelines.
  • Weighs, breeds, measures temperatures, palpates for pregnancy, artificially inseminates, dehorns, castrates, brands, and vaccinates experimental livestock.
  • Assists in surgery, inserts catheters, and obtains blood, urine, fecal and other samples from experimental livestock.
  • Determines nematode and insect populations, survey fields for spray coverage, and rear nematode and insect colonies for future laboratory use.
  • Prepares samples for laboratory analysis, mount specimens, maintain laboratory equipment, and complete basic statistical analysis on data related to agricultural or animal science research.
  • Supervises laborers on an occasional basis.
  • Maintains detailed records on crop, plant or livestock experiments.
  • Prepares daily feedings of weighed amounts for experimental diets and retrieves and weighs feed refused by research animals.
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on a variety of equipment such as tractors with various attachments, trucks, and feed mixing machines.
  • Constructs and maintains corrals, fences, barn interiors, feeders, and buildings.
  • Fumigates fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and nursery stock.
  • Constructs pest detection devices.
  • Surveys and collects root samples from citrus groves for detection of plant pests.
  • Consults and advises landowners on the control methods of fire ants.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and one year of experience in nursery, farming or livestock operations.
  • College education from an accredited institution or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for the required experience, provided such training included three courses in biology, chemistry and/or agriculture.
  • Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required high school education.
