Class: Preschool Teacher
Reports to: Program Administrator
Position SummaryThe Teacher is responsible for the care, supervision and management of a child care class. The principal duties of the teacher include: conduct focused observations of children, develop action plans, carry out activities daily and evaluate the effectiveness of child development activities, ensure the safety and well-being of the children, maintain regular communication with parents, and contribute the effective operation of the overall early care and education center. The teacher reports to the Administrator of the center.
Education- High school diploma or GED
- TECE 2
- CDA Completion
- 9 college credits in Early Childhood Education (ECE) (Transcript is required for review)
- Teacher Certificate from Department of Education
- At least 1 year of experience in a child care setting
- CPR, First Aid (completed within 60 days of hire)
- Medicationcertified (completed within 90 days of hire)
- Health Appraisal form completed by physician, with a TB Test.
- Pass criminal history background check
Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to:
- Lift to 40 lbs.
- Repetive bending, stretching, stooping, and getting up and down
- Standing for long periods of time throughout the day
- Getting as low to the child’s eye level
- Have mobility required to endure the safety of the children (running if needed)
- Work with children on the floor
- Work outdoors in any variety of weather
- Fully capable to have visual and hearing capabilities consistent with licensing safety requirements
- Perform light duty cleaning daily
- Light typing and work processing
About the Job & Pay
- 40-hour work week with hours between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

- Must be physically able to perform the job of a teacher of young children.
Duties & Responsibilities
Interaction with Children:
- Frequent eye level when talking to children
- Uses appropriate language and tone when talking to children
- Comfort children crying, and emotional need’s
- Interact with children through play and other various activities according to the class schedule and lesson plan.
- Allow children to express themselves through arts and crafts, music and movement, and physical indoor and outdoor play
- Treats all children equally, with respect, dignity, and empathy.
- Maintains a positive attitude towards children and others in the work place
- Greeting children at arrival helping them remove outerwear, and selecting activities of interest to them.
Relationship with Parents:
- Maintains a friendly but professional relationship with parents and co-workers
- Communicate and provide excellent customer service with parents and guardians and children of the center.
- Treats all parents with equally and without favoritism.
- Greet parents and guardians upon arrival and departure
- Keep communication with parents and guardians for no longer than 1 minute
Supporting Staff Relationship:
- Maintain current in CPR and First Aid Certification;
- Attend on-going training on a yearly basis of eighteen (18) clock hours; or according to the Child Care Licensing Regulations, Delaware Stars, or needs of the center.
- Attend monthly staff meetings every second Tuesday (Mandatory)
- Attend in-service meetings as requested and needed by the Administration staff (Mandatory)
- Assisting the Administrator in appropriate ways as directed
Working with other Co-Workers
- If applicable supervise assistants, aides, volunteers in the classroom
- Work cooperatively with other staff members in a positive team approach
- When required assist with new training with new child care teachers
Classroom
- Responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the children in your classroom or in your direct care.
- Be a role model to children
- Teach basic skills such as colors, shapes, numbers and letter recognition, personal hygiene, and social skills.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order.
- Read book on daily basis to children in a group and/or to smaller groups
- Observe and evaluate children’s performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
- Demonstrate activities to children.
- Prepare materials for class activities a week or day ahead
- Assist Children in using computers
- Display children art work, changing monthly and on a regular basis
- Follow the classroom schedule
- Provide guidance and discipline in a positive manner
- Able to work with children in groups and individually
- Keeps materials and equipment well presenting a neat and attractive appearance in the facility.
- Keep record of Inventory of toys and materials completed
- Inspect and replace damaged or lost materials
- Respects the use and care of materials and equipment, avoiding waste.
- Uses curriculum planning time efficiently during quite/down time
- Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children’s progress and needs, determine their priorities for their children, and suggest ways that they can promote learning and development.
Classroom Paperwork
- Keep all appropriate records such as attendance, children records, CACFP sheets, ETC.
- Implement curriculum into weekly lesson plans (Will be typed)
- Report progress of children to parents through communication through completed daily reports
- Observe and monitor children’s learning and play activities to document on their developmental progress reports
- Prepare and continually add to each child’s portfolio
- Prepare developmental progress reports twice a year
- Observations of each child upon arrival to the center and/or the classroom
- Monitors and assesses each child’s growth, development, performance, notes changes, maintains appropriate records and provides reports.
- Write weekly newsletters to parents and guardians on what is happening in the classroom, curriculum, and events in the center.
- Write weekly progress notes to parents and guardians on their child’s weekly progress, behavior, or what’s needed to know.
- Document child attendance on the CACFP meals during the time of the meal
Daily Care of Children
- Assist and Monitor children during bathroom use and handwashing.
- Assist and Monitor children during meal times
- Teach proper eating habits and personal hygiene.
- Assist children with dressing (making sure clothes are appropriately being worn correctly)
- Assist children in good appearance (nose and face cleaned, and shoes tied)
Confidentiality
- Maintains confidentiality of parents and guardians, children, other co-workers, and the center, and center paper work.
Child Observations & Assessments
- Observe children monthly and document what is observed and heard
- Observe and document other behaviors in the classroom on a frequent ongoing basis
- Create child goals and plan child goals around the lesson plan
- Create progress reports twice a year to families and conduct a parent-teacher conference twice a year
- Check Developmental milestones of children on a monthly to quartly basis.
- Administrator Classroom Assessments to children and create child goals from the assessments.
Safety
- Monitor children for signs of child abuse and report incidents of suspected abuse to the Administrator and appropriate authorities
- Observation checks upon arrival on children once they have entered your classroom
- Maintain and report incidents/accidents to the Administrator and parents/guardians
- Scout the playground, pick up any trash that is in the kids way of play or at reach
Classroom Cleaning
- Cleaning and sanitizing daily
- Vacuuming and sweeping daily
- Cleaning equipment and toys on Thursday
Delaware Stars
- Arrange a classroom environment in accordance to the ITERS, ECERS, SCERS Book,
- Follow Little Friends Learning Academy Program goals and classroom goals for Delaware Stars
- Organize and label materials, and display students' work in a manner appropriate for their ages and perceptual skills.
