Class: IV Subject: Science Topic:Types of roots Date:

Objectives / Activity Plan/ Methodology / Time
80min / Resources / Assessment
Students should be able to:
  • observe the transportation of water through plant root in a simulation
  • observe and compare different types of roots
  • identify edible roots from the given samples
/ The first part of the lesson will be conducted in the resource room/IT lab.
Recap:
  • I will elicit the functions, parts and types of roots through questioning.
Main Activity:
  • I will show them different images of root including: longitudinal and the cross section of root and the passage of water through root on multimedia/LCD. (I will not explainterms which are not in their course). Then, I will show them the simulation of water absorption in roots (URL-1).
  • I will ask students to write down any questions that they have while watching the simulation. Students will then share their questions with a partner and discuss possible answers. This will be followed by whole class discussion.
.
  • I will ask the students if they know what edible and non-edible means. If required, I will explain the meaning of the two terms to them.
Group Activity
  • I will provide 4 different roots to each group and ask students to describe their shape/ colour/ root hair/ size/ softness-hardness/ smoothness of skin etc. Students will record their observations of each root on a flip chart.
  • Next I will ask students to select any two roots and identify their similarities and differences on a Venn diagram.
  • I will ask students to share their findings with the whole class
I will ask: How can you tell that a root has food stored in it for the plant?
Next I will ask Q1. Which of the given sample roots (carrot, coriander, turnip) stores food for the plant?
Q2. Are all plant roots edible?
Q3. Are the roots of a spinach plant edible? Which part of the spinach plant stores food?
  • I will ask students to read pages 160-164 of IPS textbook 4 with a pencil in their hands to underline the difficult terms. After their reading I will have a whole class discussion and will explain them the terms that they do not understand
Written work:
  • Students will answer the questions in their pamphlets (LN)
Wrap up:
  • At random I will ask students to tell the answers of the questions they did in the written task.
Homework:
Plan a meal that includes foods from at least three different edible plant parts. It must include at least one edible root.
Extension Work:
  • Early finishers will be asked to write down any queries they have about plants and if it is not answered in their textbook on a piece of paper to be displayed on the wondering wall. OR I will give them relevant books to answer the questions already posted on the wondering wall.

  • Images of cross and longitudinal sections of root
  • URL-1

  • Images of different types of roots: grass roots, mangrove plant roots, strangler fig root, orchid plant root and clasping roots.
  • Roots of different plants: radish, turnip, beet root, spinach, sweet potato, carrot, spring onion, mint and coriander with roots
  • One A4 sheet for each group with a venn diagram
  • One flip chart to record their observations
/ Students will be assessed on their ability to:
  • observe the transportation of water through plant root in a simulation
  • observe and compare different types of roots
  • identify edible roots from the given samples

Evaluation of student learning:
  • What did the students learn in this lesson?
  • What did they actually do?
  • What were they not able to do/understand?
/ Evaluation of Teaching:
If you were to teach this lesson again, what would do differently? Why?
(Comment on any ONE aspect of your teaching or planning)

Lesson Notes (LN)

Details of group work

Each group will comprise of four members. Every member will have to give his/her input in the task. The individual role of each group member will be as follows: (These individual tasks will be done with the consensus of other members)

  • One of the members will keep the edible roots with him/her and the other will keep the non-edible roots.
  • The group member with good handwriting skills will write the answers of the questions on the A4 sheet
  • Fourth member will answer during the feedback session.

Questions for written task:

What are the two types of root systems found in plants explain each of them.

Why are tap roots edible and fibrous roots non-edible?

What is the function of the following parts of a plant: root cap, root hair

Correct the following false statements:

All the roots grow underground.

Plants with fibrous root system store their food in their roots.

Roots of orchid plant absorb water from the soil.
