/ Bell Ringer and Anticipatory Set: What animals are on the covers of these books? Which book is pretend? What are pretend books called? Which book is real? What are real books called? Objectives: 1) Student’s knowledge of fiction versus non-fiction will be reinforced. 2) Students will learn of their AR status. Procedure: Teacher Input: The teacher will first read the book called Dogs and Puppies by Anita Ganeri. She will then ask questions to check for comprehension. Next, The teacher will read the book called McDuff Moves In by Rosemary Wells. She will then ask questions to check for comprehension. Next, the students will learn about their AR status. Closure: Turn to someone next to you and tell them one thing that you learned about puppies?

Grade 2

/ Bell Ringer and Anticipatory Set: Raise your hand if you have a dog at home. Raise your hand if you have a big dog at home? What breed is it? Has anyone heard of Great Danes?
Objectives:1) Students will learn a few facts about Great Danes. Students will be introduced to Bill Wallace’s books and the location of his books in the library.2) Students will learn of their AR status. Procedure:The teacher will first read a few facts about Great Danes such as size and weight from the book called The Reader’s Digest Illustrated Book of Dogs. Next, the teacher will talk in general about Bill Wallace’s books. She will state that the books are higher 3rd grade and 4th grade level books. She will show the students where these books are located. She will then read the first chapter of the book called Watchdogs and the Coyotes by Bill Wallace. Closure:Where do I find Bill Wallace’s books? What is the call number?

Grades3-5

/ Bell Ringer and Anticipatory Set: Would you like to know your AR status and your potential to win a gold, silver or bronze medal during your graduation ceremony?
Objectives: 1) Students will learn of their AR status. 2) Students will have extra time for sustained silent reading and for taking AR tests. Procedure:The teacher will first explain how important it is to calculate how many points per week is needed to reach their AR goals in the last quarter of the year. She will read out student’s AR status of the first 6 highest accumulation of points.The students will have an extended time to read their library books and take their AR tests. Closure:How many minutes should you be reading every day?

Class format for Grades 1-5:

  1. The lesson takes the first 15-20 minutes of the class period.
  2. Book selection takes the next 15 minutes. Call one table at a time to get their markers.
  3. The next 10 minutes is silent reading at their assigned seats or elsewhere.

NOTES:K-1st graders can check out one book. Grades 2-5 can check out two books.
