A. Lincoln’s Presidency

1. President Lincoln ( 1861 ) – He would allow slavery in existing states but there would still be more free states.

2. The south was suspicious of Lincoln trying to abolish all slavery.

1. A LAW THAT ALLOWED SLAVE CATCHERS TO GO UP NORTH AND CAPTURE THEIR SLAVES.

2. DRED SCOTT WAS A SLAVE THAT SUED FOR HIS FREEDOM BUT THE SUPREME COURT SAID THAT HE WAS PROPERTY AND COULD NOT SUE.

* dredscott was a former slave. His owner died. He sued in the supreme court for his freedom. Supreme court stated that slaves are property and could not sue.

North :

1. There were 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 soldiers that served in the Union or Lincoln’s army. ( 618,000 to 620,000 death total for both sides. )

2. Their goal was to stop Southern secession and end slavery.

3. 360,222 Union soldiers died during battle or through diseases such as gangrene. ( That is why amputation was so common to prevent this. )

4. Lincoln was not against slavery in the beginning but literature such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Narrative of Frederick Douglass changed his mind.

5. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania : Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered a charge up a hill to attack the Union. ( Pickett’s Charge ).

6. The Union won Gettysburg but these 3 days led to 50,000 dead.

7. Loss : Fort Sumter, SC ( 1st battle ); Manassas, VA ( Confed. Stonewall Jackson –spectators shot )

8. Victory in Antietam, Maryland ( Confederate Lee’s plan found in a cigar ) : Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation ( free all slaves. )

9. Union General Ulysses S. Grant ( 18th President ) accepted the surrender of the South by Confederate General Lee at Appomattox Courthouse.

10. Aftermath of the war : Lincoln was assassinated by the actor John Wilkes Booth; 13 th Am ( freed slaves ); 14th ( citizenship for slaves ); 15th ( voting rights for African-American men )

South :

1.There were 750,000 to 1,250,000 Confederate or Rebel or Southern soldiers that served in Jefferson Davis’s army.

2. Their goal was to continue slavery, preserve states’ rights for popular sovereignty ( let each state decide their own laws ).

3. 258,000 Confederate soldiers died during battle or through diseases.

4. Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States of America based in their “ capital “, Richmond, Virginia. His house was considered the Confederate White House.

5. Union General William “ Tecumseh “ Sherman conquered Atlanta, Georgia and burned it down all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

6. After the surrender at Appomattox, Southerners felt defeated and ashamed.

7. They went through a period of rebuilding the South : Reconstruction.

8. Southern generals were not considered traitors and left alone to welcome them back as Americans.

9. Unfortunately, after the 13th Am, there was the rise of the Klu Klux Klan, a hate group.

10. Freed slaves also led to Jim Crow Laws or laws for segregation.
