To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Student name, a senior from Name of school High School. This year I competed in the National History Day Competition held April 30, 2016 in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I was awarded a first or second place finish. This year’s theme: Rights and Responsibilities inspired me to create a type of project, titled: name of project Did you know the United States was the first country to mass produce penicillin in 1944-1945, to treat the soldiers of World War Two? (WRITE A FACT ABOUT YOUR PROJECT) Neither did I until I began my research for NHD. What Is History Day?

National History Day is not just a day, but every day! The National History Day program is a year-long education program that culminates in a national contest every June. For more than twenty-five years the National History Day program has promoted systemic educational reform related to the teaching and learning of history in America's schools. The combination of creativity and scholarship built into the NHD program anticipated current educational reforms, making National History Day a leading model of performance-based learning.

NHD is a year-long education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and carry out research using facilities such as libraries, archives, museums, oral history, interviews, and historic websites. After collecting the necessary data, analyzing and interpreting their findings and sources, and drawing conclusions about the selected topics importance in history, students present their work. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries and research papers based on research related to an annual theme. These projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions. These works are evaluated by educators and professional historians.
