CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

INTRODUCTION

Katipunan Elementary School fully recognizes its responsibilities for child protection for a harmonious and safe environment. This school is implementing a moral and legal obligation to ensure that, when given responsibility for children/young people, teachers, PTA Officials and volunteers working in the school provide them with the highest possible standard of care.

Katipunan Elementary School is committed to device and implements policies so that everyone in school accepts their responsibilities to protect children from harm and abuse. This means to follow policies to protect children and report any concerns about their welfare to appropriate authorities.

Katipunan Elementary School Child Protection Policy aims to promote good practices, providing children and young people with appropriate safety/protection while studying in the school and to allow teachers and Child Protection Committee to make informed and confident responses to specific child protection issues.

A child/young person is defined as a person under the age of 18 (Children’s Act 1989).

POLICY STATEMENT

Katipunan Elementary School is committed to the following:

a.)The welfare of the child

b.)All children, whatever their age, culture, gender, language, racial origin, religious belief and/or sexual identity should be able to participate in all school activities in a fun and safe environment

c.)Taking all reasonable steps to protect children from harm, discrimination and degrading treatment and to respect their rights, wishes and feelings

d.)Working in partnership with parents and children is essential for the protection of children

MONITOR AND REVIEW OF THE POLICY

The policy should be reviewed every 3 years or whenever there is a major change in the Child Protection Policy Committee or in relevant legislation.

PROMOTING GOOD PRACTICES

To provide children with the best possible experiences and opportunities in Katipunan Elementary School, everyone must operate within an accepted ethical framework such as The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.

All personnel should adhere to the following principles and action.

a.)Always work in an open environment (e.g. avoiding private or unobserved situations and encouraging open communication with no secrets)

b.)Make experiences of all school activities fun and enjoyable: promote fairness, confront and deal with bullying

c.)Treat all children and young people equally and with respect and dignity

d.)Involve parents/guardians wherever possible, e.g. children need to be supervised in out- of- school activities, encourage parents to take responsibility for their own child

e.)Request written parental consent for any significant travel arrangements (e.g. scouting, District level/Division level academic contest, School-related non-academic activities, etc.)

f.)Ensure that if mixed genders are taken away, they should be accompanied by a male and female member or staff

g.)Be an excellent role model, this includes not smoking or drinking alcohol in the company of young people

h.)Always give enthusiastic and constructive feedback rather than negative criticism

i.)Secure written parental consent for the school to act in loco parentis, to give permission for the school administration of emergency first aid or other medical treatment if the need arises

j.)Keep a written record of any injury that occurs, along with details of any treatment given

INTRODUCTION

Katipunan Elementary School children have the right to be cared for and protected. We all have a role to play to ensure that children are safe and their needs are met.

Guided by the principles of the school’s Child Protection Policy, best interest of the child, respect for the views of the child, and the right of the child to life, the Protection Committee shall ensure that all children in Katipunan Elementary School are provided legal protection within a child sensitive justice system.

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

Katipunan Elementary School Child Protection Committee shall have the following responsibilities:

  1. Establish a system of collecting periodic reports from members on cases filed them including status of such cases;
  2. Request member agencies and other government instrumentalities to address specific issues brought to the committee’s attention that require immediate action;
  3. Coordinate with the Barangay Council for synchronization and harmonization of actions on the legal protection of children;
  4. Develop and recommend policies and guidelines to address gaps and issues identified in the investigation and prosecution of cases as well as in the legal protection of children;
  5. Formulate a uniform protocol for capacity-building of duty bearers and stakeholders with emphasis on multi-disciplinary approach;
  6. Call upon non-member agencies for assistance when necessary in the exercise of its functions and duties.

COMPOSITION

Katipunan Elementary School Child Protection Committee shall be chaired by a School Head and co-chaired by the School Guidance teacher which composes as follows:
