JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Assistant Librarian – Part-time

Grade 1

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: To perform library work involving respectful, courteous service to patrons in an efficient, professional, and timely manner. Works under the direction of the City Librarian.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

A.  Participates in yearly inventory.

B.  Keeps current on library materials and technology through websites and book review data bases.

C.  Recommends books and materials for purchase.

D.  Answers and assists patrons with computer and reference questions as well as assisting with homework and locating books and other materials for research and school projects.

E.  Checks books in and out.

F.  Places requests and notifies patrons when requested items are available.

G.  Shelves books.

H.  Processes items brought in by the courier.

I.  Runs and pulls the list of requested items daily.

J.  Opens new borrower accounts for library cards.

K.  Reads shelves to make sure books and materials are in correct order.

L.  Rearranges shelves as needed or as directed by the City Librarian.

M.  Assists youth librarian with programs as and when needed.

N.  Enforces library policies and rules for the safety and comfort of patrons and staff.

O.  Maintains the circulation area in a neat, orderly, and organized fashion.

P.  Keeps the public information areas clean, clutter-free, organized, and up-to-date.

Q.  Performs other related duties as directed or required by the City Librarian.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

v  Knowledge of library operations.

v  Knowledge of business mathematics, English, spelling and punctuation.

v  Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment, including word processing programs and Excel.

v  Ability to assist public with reference services including internet searches.

v  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely and to work with library patrons.

v  Ability to make decisions in accordance with departmental and City policies.

v  Ability to maintain office files and records.

v  Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

v  Ability to operate a personal computer.

v  Skill in use of internet programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduation or GED required with a minimum 2 years’ experience in clerical/library services. (A comparable amount of education, training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATION:

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

v  Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses)

v  Acceptable hearing (with or without a hearing aid)

v  Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

v  Ability to sit and stand for long periods.

v  Ability to bend, stoop, and lift.

v  Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
