Position Title: Mechanic Assistant

Division / Section: Public Works/Fleet Services

Position Status: Full-Time; Non-Exempt; Tenure & Benefit Eligible

Work Week: Monday – Friday, Some Saturdays;

Winter and Summer Hours: 6AM – 5:30PM; Hours may vary; Shifts Will Rotate

Salary Range: $16.0135 per hour (Pay Plan Will Increase July 1)

Actively supports and upholds the City’s stated mission and values. This position reports to the Fleet Supervisor and/or Leadworker, and may assist the Mechanic I and Mechanic II with assigned tasks, or work independently depending on the complexity of assignment. Employees of this class perform above average work in equipment repair work on automobiles, trucks, snow removal equipment, light and heavy mechanized equipment, and other similar equipment. Employees work under general supervision and direction and are expected to exercise independent judgment as to the method of repair after receiving written or oral instructions concerning the operating condition of a piece of equipment. Work may be tested or inspected by the Mechanic I, Mechanic II and/or Leadworker upon completion.

·  Compliance: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.

·  Council Communications: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Council’s adopted priorities and direction.

·  Reporting: This job does not have duties related to reporting to federal/state/local agencies, but may assist with reporting requirements, as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

·  Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.

·  Performs semi-skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of City light and heavy vehicles and equipment.

·  Conducts preventative maintenance such as lubrication, oil/filter changes, light electrical and working alongside seasoned mechanics. These functions will be carried out on all types and sizes of City vehicles and equipment.

·  Inspects, maintains, and repairs all aspects of a wide variety of gasoline powered automotive equipment such as automobiles, light trucks and other gasoline powered specialized equipment.

·  Assists the Mechanic I, Mechanic II and/or Leadworker with assigned tasks.

·  Repairs electrical, fuel supply systems, hydraulic systems, including master cylinder, and proportioning valves, engine cooling systems, including radiators, heater cores, and hoses.

·  May assist with heavy equipment repair or maintenance of a routine or well-prescribed nature, as assigned.

·  Make minor repairs on heavy equipment such as hydraulic hoses, cylinders and broken fittings.

·  Replaces wheel cylinders and relines and adjusts brakes.

·  Performs lubrication and oil changes on light vehicles and equipment.

·  Installs auxiliary equipment, batteries, tires, wiring, door glass, door handles, and brakes.

·  Maintains records of repairs made, work orders, and time worked.

·  Works in the field and in the shop as assigned.

·  Performs tire repair work and keep records and charge out time worked.

·  Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

·  High School diploma or G.E.D.

·  Some work experience or training in the Automotive/Truck repair field or through a Community College, High School or vocational program is a plus; however we will train the right individual.

·  Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above minimum requirements.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

·  Trade school certificate relating to automotive mechanics.

·  ASE certification in gasoline engines and modules A1-A8.

·  ASE certified Master Automotive Technician.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

·  Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver’s license.

·  All emergency service employees shall maintain their principal residence within a prescribed area. The prescribed area shall be defined as a 12-mile radius from City Hall with the following exceptions: a) Ten (10) miles from City Hall along Highway 180 North, with a five (5) mile wide (2-1/2 miles on each side) corridor, b) Fifteen (15) miles from City Hall along Interstate 40 East, with a five (5) mile wide (2-1/2 miles on each side) corridor.

·  Incumbents of this position are subject to post-employment random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol screening.

·  Must be able to furnish some hand tools for this position, including basic combination wrenches, screwdrivers and ratchet and socket sets ¼” through ½” drive.

·  Must have the ability to be contacted and to respond in a timely manner and be willing and able to work 12-hour shifts during snow removal or emergencies operations, including weekends and holidays, as assigned.

·  Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

·  Some knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of automotive equipment.

·  Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of tire repair and light mechanical work and heavy equipment.

·  Some knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices of tire repair and light mechanical work as well as heavy equipment repairs.

·  Some knowledge of the principles of the operation of mechanical repair.

·  Some knowledge of electrical systems and operations.

·  Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot minor vehicle problems.

·  Some knowledge and ability to repair mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical defects of a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment in all phases of mechanical repair and maintenance. Work may be tested and/or reviewed by a Mechanic I, Mechanic II and/or Leadworker.

·  Ability to perform preventive maintenance on all types of light vehicles and heavy equipment under minimal supervision.

·  Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment employed in all phases of automotive equipment and repair.

·  Ability to maintain time and materials records.

·  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

·  Ability to lift tires, parts and equipment as required by the job.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

·  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger/handle/feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to sit, and occasionally required to smell.

·  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

·  Vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to meet the vision requirements needed to obtain and hold a valid driver’s license.

·  Working conditions include frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions; working near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration. The employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to work in high, precarious places; and extreme heat.

·  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
