CIRENCESTER LIVESTOCK MARKET REPORT

64 REARING & WEANED CALVES

10.30 am – Auctioneer: Jon Pullin and Ben Baggott

Overall Average £158.83

Calves very dear again for all types on offer. 4 bull calves over £300 per head figures not seen since the old export days. More calves could have been sold to a packed ring of mainly farmer buyers and many going home disappointed. Please note it is impossible to value cattle in the current climate and if you are not selling live you are no doubt missing out.

Friesian (12): Sold to a top of £68 for Stroud Green Farm Ltd, best types on offer £38-£60+ but no first quality types on offer. Small rearing types £19-£26.

Native Breeds (21): Hereford bulls reached a top of £198 and £180 for M/s Norton, heifers from the same home £65-£85. Medium sorts less money smaller sorts £42-£58.

The best Angus bulls sold to £260 for John Millard, £198 for Reading & Kirby best £184+, mediums £160, small sorts at £100 - £120. Angus heifers reached £98 for L J Scott a run of medium heifers £46-£80.

Simmental (3): A good bull from Stroud Green made £300, their heifer at £162, Ben Gough’s heifer £152.

Limousin/Blonde (9): A real cracker of a bull from Liz Best made £320, R & C Ponting & Son £312 and £298, £278 for R A Williams & Son. Medium types £190 - £215. Blonde bulls to £225 for Mrs K J Gallop, Chris Gallop’s £190.

British Blue (8): £315 top for Robert Oughtons bull calf best £255+ all bulls averaged £253. Tony little made £200 of his heifer.

An assortment of weaned calves mainly last autumn born saw Hereford bull to £270 for U Godsell & Son who also sold Blue bulls to £360 and £345. D C & B Wilcox at £350. Angus bulls to £228 and £222 for D C & B Wilcox, a run of Brown Swiss bulls sold to £140 per head.

67 SUCKLER COWS/CALVES & BULLS

Today’s sale included the Genuine Dispersal Sale of 30 Simmental cows on behalf of C J & C King, Minety. All sold as back to the Simmental Bull to calve again this spring, the best sorts topped at £820, £805 and £800 per head. The 28 sold averaged £756 per head. Their 2004 Pedigree Simmental bull sold well to realise £1,420.

Messrs P Deighton reduced their herd of mainly native breed cows (Sussex Red Poll etc) with Murray Grey calves at foot and back with the bull to a top of £745, £725 and £700 with all on offer to average £614 per head. Their in calf Angus, Devon and Sussex cows sold £550 - £575.

Mrs Ann Orr-Ewing sold a purebred Charolais Bull to make £2,000.

224 STORE CATTLE

A shorter entry following last weeks flying trade saw yet another very strong trade with some cattle £50 - £80 dearer.

The strong Continental x steers (24 – 28mths) were again in short supply selling to a top price of £1010 (138p/kg) for a Simmental from M/s T & J Wyatt, Eastington. The trade saw Friesian steers to £790 (127p/kg) & £755 (136p/kg) from Mr A Humphris, Wick.

The strong Continental x heifers (24 – 28mths) traded between £700 - £800 generally topping £850 (167p/kg) for a Limousin heifer from Mr P Robertson, Falfield. The strong Hereford & Angus heifers sold to £885 (144p/kg) from M/s W Simmons & Son, Hewelsfield.

The farming cattle (18 – 24 months) sold to an unbelievable trade. The best Continental x steers traded between £700 - £800 (140p/kg – 170p/kg) topping at £860 (160p/kg) for Blonde x steers from Mr A Cozens, Eastington. A grand run of strong Friesian x steers from Mr P Robertson, Falfield sold to £940 (145p/kg). The native breeds continued to sell well with Aberdeen Angus x steers selling to £815 (163p/kg) from Mrs D Bailey, Easton Grey.

The heifers (18 - 24 months) saw Continental heifers trading between £680 - £800 topping at £900 (155p/kg) for Bazadais x heifers from M/s Hazell & Jefferies, Goring on Thames. Charolais x heifers from Mr P Whiting, Woodchester sold to £885 (158p/kg).

The younger stores (12 – 18mths) also met a very strong trade with the Continental steers £625 - £700 topping at £850 (167p/kg) for Limousin x steers again from Mr P Robertson.

Continental heifers (12 – 18mths) traded between £490 - £600 topping at £695 (165p/kg) for Simmental x heifers from M/s D Rumming & Son, Leigh.

The weaned calves (6 – 10mths) were in short supply and met a flying trade with British Blue bulls (6mths) to £412 (147p/kg) from M/s Godsell, Stroud. Bazadais x steers (6 – 9mths) sold to £508 from Mr W Stewart, Edge.

Overall Average – 156p/kg

A good entry met another strong trade with the handyweights selling between 160 – 175p/kg topping at 182p/kg £73.80 for 40.5kg from M/s B J Ford & Sons.

The heavier hoggetts traded over £70 topping at £80 (3 times) for 50.5kg, 53kg & 55kg from Mr P Baker, Mr D Corfield & Mr R Tovey respectively.

A fair entry met a very strong trade with an unbelievable overall average of £51.80. The best Suffolk & Continental x ewes £65 - £75 topping at £84.80 with the £80 barrier broken 3 times.

Medium ewes traded between £45 - £55 and the smaller leaner ewes £30 - £40.

A pleasing entry met a good firm trade with the stronger stores £50+ topping at £60. The medium lambs traded between £43 - £48 with the longer term lambs generally £35 - £45.

The commercial cattle traded between 135 – 150p/kg generally with heavier weights & lesser shaped sorts 125 – 135p/kg.

All forward meeting an excellent trade again with spirited bidding throughout.

18 Overage Steers - Avg 121 ppkg Top 150 ppkg

A grand run of cattle forward saw Limousin top at 150p for J Holford. Best Continentals 140+, 1st quality Friesians 126-130 for D S King, 118 – 130 for all best Friesians. Plainer types 102-110 medium types 1150-120p.

8 Overage Heifers – Avg 99.19 ppkg Top 148 ppkg

Sold to a top of 148 ppkg for a 690 kg Simmental from Boddington Estates. All heifers forward 121 to 148p.

22 Overage Cows – Avg 99.19 ppkg Top 148 ppkg

As close as possible to averaging £1 per kg with another excellent trade throughout. Messrs B J Ford & Son top at 148 ppkg 690 kg, Simmental from Boddington Estates 139p, £1066.45. Best Continental cows 114p plus Friesians topped at 112p for T & V Bennett. Generally best Friesians 94-110p all meat cows 80p plus.

Please note next week is a red market, fit cows will be well sold, plainer feeding types should be held to a non red day as these cannot go to feed.
