Circle the State with Song Festival Information

What is Circle the State with Song (CSWS)?

CSWS is a children’s choral festival sponsored by Indiana Music Education Association. This festival is for students in 4th-8th grades to participate in either an elementary (4-6) or middle school (6-8) choir. It is a great way to involve children in music outside of school. Students will learn seven songs with me and at home using an online recording. Then, our students will join together with students from all over our areato practice and perform in a concert with a choral conductor. In addition, students will be able to socialize with students from other schools who share the love of music.

Who can join?

  • Students will be selected from 4th and 5th grades.
  • Students who were in Circle the State with Song last year will be accepted automatically.
  • Students that have not previously done Circle the State with Song will need to do a brief audition to make sure they meet the requirements.I will just have them echo some Do, Re, Mi, etc. patterns and sing a short familiar song. 4th Graders can stop by my room before school starts (when they get off the bus/after breakfast-I will let 4th grade teachers know this is ok). Fifth graders can sing for me during lunch/walk time since I have lunch duty with them.

  • Checks should be made payable to Grassy Creek Elementary.
  • This is NON-REFUNDABLE. If there is a cancellation due to snow, the snow make-up date is Feb. 25.

How will my student learn the music?

  • I have two practice times for rehearsals. Your student may come to one or both. One is Thursday mornings starting at 8:05-8:45 (think about bringing breakfast or having your child eat the school’s breakfast) and Thursday after school from 3:45-4:25. Practices will start Thursday, October 27th. Students can be dropped off and picked up at door 8.
  • There will be practice recordings on a website for students to rehearse at home.
  • The students must have the music memorized before the performance.
  • We also hope to have other schools come and practice with us after school closer to the festival. Dates and times to be determined.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call or e-mail.

Thank you!
