Church History

The Walter Hill Chapel held its first meeting on December 1st, 1968 in the Walter Hill School building under guidance of Maney Avenue Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. Brother E. C. Sisk served as our first pastor. We became affiliated with Third Baptist Church on July 1st, 1970 with 22 members. On Sunday, December 10th, 1978, the mission was constituted as Walter Hill First Baptist Church. The property on which our church stands was a gift to the Concord Baptist Association by the Aldron Family of LaVergne. Ground breaking for our new building was held in April 1971 and the building completed in 1972.

A new educational building was dedicated on January 15th, 1984. In 1985, we began to enlarge and remodel our old auditorium. The first service in our current auditorium was Easter 1997. Renovation of the old auditorium started in late summer of 1999, converting it to Sunday School space with a pastor's study and church office. The newly renovated area was occupied in January 2000. A new Christian Life Center was completed in 2008 providing additional Sunday School, fellowship, and kitchen space. We enjoy all these blessings today because of the many who gave of themselves to make our facilities possible! May we be a blessing to those who will follow us!

The Lord has blessed our church family with leaders. Pastors who have served are: E. C. Sisk (1968-1972), Hall Youree (1972-1976), J. H. Harvey (1976-1977), Don Wilson (19771978), Ron Odom (1978-1982), Roy Bunch (1982-1994), Bill Fox (1994-1995), Darrell Whaley (1995-1998), Murray Mathis (1998-2001), Shelby Smith (2002-present).

Today there are many who make possible our ministries that touch every age group. We serve together by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit that we might all grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Our ultimate goal is to love God with all our hearts and to be instruments of His love to others. We desire to glorify God in all we do. We have seen many changes since that first meeting in a little country schoolhouse on a cold December Sunday in 1968. Our membership is growing and God is continually blessing us with great leaders, teachers and financial support! Above all, people are coming to Christ for salvation!

As we stand together to face the future, may we keep our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith. Jesus alone is the source of our strength and our hope and it is through His Word and His Spirit that He gives the direction to our church. He is the Head of this church family and we are His servants.

"I will build My Church; and the gates of Hell shall not overpower it." Matthew 16:18

We meet together to serve Jesus. He calls us to be His Body to love God and love each other in His Name. We have been called into a relationship with Him and each other to grow in the Grace and Knowledge of Jesus. In following Him we learn to serve others and share His Good News of Eternal Life. Our chief aim is to glorify Him with our lives.

God’s Word is our foundation. God’s Holy Spirit is our empowerment. His Gospel is our message.

Jesus died for us and we desire to live for Him. We are the Walter Hill First Baptist Church Family!
