Church Calling Office Volunteer

Task description

At Christian Aid we have a vision to end poverty – and step by step we are doing it. But there’s still more to do and we need local churches to get involved. As a volunteer you’ll extend our capacity to end poverty by building links with local churches, informing them about local events and providing them with the resources they need to help them fight poverty.

As a volunteer in the South East team you will have the opportunity to use and develop your telephone and administration skills, be part of a team and contribute to Christian Aid’s work in the South East to impact the most vulnerable across 40 countries. For this role you will work closely with the office administrator and the regional team who will guide you as you assist in establishing and building relationships with Churches across Essex, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

What will I do?

  • Calling new churches and churches who have supported Christian Aid in the past to arrange a visit from a Regional Coordinator
  • Logging calls on a spreadsheet and liaising with regional coordinator to ensure appropriate follow up
  • Find opportunities for volunteer teachers and speakers to share about Christian Aid at local schools and churches
  • Calling Christian Aid group organisers and church reps to see how we can further support them to maximise their fundraising, campaigning and praying during Christian Aid Week and the rest of the year
  • Sharing ideas that have worked well elsewhere, promoting new fundraising ideas and helping churchesreview and plan their activities
  • Being a point of contact to answer questions

How much time can I give?

We’re looking for one day a week or more, but we’ll be as flexible as we can so do get in touch. The role will be reviewed after your trial period and we hope as you grow and develop so will the role.

What skills do I need?

  • a good knowledge of the work of Christian Aid
  • enthusiasm for the work of Christian Aid
  • an engaging telephone manner and good interpersonal skills
  • good knowledge churches and local church networks
  • an ability to use Microsoft Excel and Outlook
  • good organisational skills
  • an ability to work as part of a team
  • the ability to maintain confidentiality

Are there any other requirements?

  • you will need to be in sympathy with Christian Aid’s values and vision
  • you will need to live within reasonable travelling distance of the Christian Aid London Office (35 Lower Marsh, Waterloo, SE1 7RL) where you’ll be based so that your travel expenses won’t exceed £15 per visit.
