Blatchford & Don Take British Titles
Liz Blatchford was a runaway winner of the British Elite Triathlon Championships held at the Great Liverpool Triathlon. Blatchford in perfect racing conditions, won in a time of one hour 54minutes 56seconds, ahead of Olympic sixth-placer Michelle Dillon (1:56:25) and Leanda Cave (1:56:57).
Blatchford said "I knew it was going to be tough race and it's great to have won my first British title. Leanda (Cave) helped me a lot during the swim and bike ride and I knew going into the run, it would be very difficult for anyone including Michelle (Dillon), to catch me."
Blatchford today easily held-off Dillon's storming finish although Team GB's top Olympic performer posted the fastest 10K time of the morning. The defending champion's superquick run of 35min 7sec lifted her from sixth position after the 1,500m swim and 40K bike ride, to second place. But she was unable to catch the winner who along with former World Cup champion Cave and Anneliese Heard held a two-and-a-half minutes lead going into the run. Blatchford after the first of the four laps in that discipline, had opened a 20sec gap ahead the Welsh pair which she extended to 52sec by the half distance. Thereafter victory was a formality while a stunning final circuit pulled Dillon ahead of Cave in the closing stages just as she did last year in Swansea.
"There's still a bit of Athens in my legs," admitted Dillon. “The race was only 10 days ago, I thought that I might catch the other two girls but I was quite tired and knew reaching Liz would prove too much."
Tim Don despite his exertions in Athens was in good enough shape to produce a speedy finish and win the men's title in 1:48:27. Don 18th at the Olympics, conserved his energy until the final 600 metres where he sprinted away from Stuart Hayes. The closely matched pair until that point had helped each other. Then the telling breakaway saw Hayes lose contact to finish only two seconds down on the new champion.
Richard Stannard whose strength lies in his swimming ability, took the bronze-medal with a time of 1:49:40. Andrew Johns who finished two places ahead of Don at the Games, on this occasion was well behind his team-mate. Johns clocked 1:52:46, finishing seventh place after having been in the leading pack of eight when the 10K race got underway.

The newsletter cannot run without information from its own members if you do have anything which you want to include in the newsletter please contact me using one of the forms of communication below.

Post22 Green Gables, Lichfield Road, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, B74 2SX
The deadline for inclusion in the September newsletter is Monday 30th August.
A renewal form is attached at the end of the newsletter. Membership for 2004 will be £20. The subscription has had to increase this year to offset the cost of the insurance that the club has had to take to ensure that all the athletes, including non-BTA members are covered. Will any members whose details change please inform the membership secretary so that we can keep the club members database as up to date as possible.
Another addition to the club membership is ‘Associate Membership’. This type of membership is similar to the same membership that applies at the BTA and means that the member is not allowed to race for the club. This type of membership would cost £5 (see ammended membership form at the end of the newsletter)

After much deliberation I am proposing the Roade Triathlon (nr. Northampton) on 26th September as the Club Championships. It is relatively local & the distance means that anyone can take part.
It's over the pool 'sprint' distance(ish) of 414m swim, 20km bike & 5km run.
The link below will take you to the web site/entry form:
Club Championships Instructions:
- Enter the race as you would any other.
- Email your estimated times for each of the disciplines or your overall time for the whole race.
- To make it a 'fair' race I will then give a time handicap to each Coventry Tri competitor. For example, if the fastest person on paper is 1hour and the slowest is 1hr 30mins then the handicap for the slowest person is 30mins. Sound complicated? Don't worry about it - just send me an HONEST estimate of your times!
- Although there is the standard entry fee for the race (payable to the race organisers) entry to the Club Championships is FREE and the winner (on handicap) will receive a trophy at the annual club dinner.
Any questions email me.
Regards,
Mike McGillion
The current list of entrants on the race organiser’s website, shows the following members listed (as of 07/08/09)
Peter Beasley, Mike Bennett, James Dent, Martyn Brunt, Peter Watkins, Phil Richmond, Andy Lines, David Jones, Bill Livingstone, Karen Smith, Keith Burdett, Mike McGillion, John Dyer and Dave Barrile.
The clubs coached swim sessions will start again on Sunday 19th September at Abbey Fields Leisure Centre in Kenilworth. They will run from 5:45-6:45pm, the cost remains at £4 per session.
Over the past few years a number of members have found these sessions extremely useful in reducing their swim times.
This years meal and presentation will take place before christmas. An Indian restaurant in Earlsdaon, Coventry has been provisionally booked for Sunday 5th December, 8pm seat for an 8.30 start.
Given that most people will be swimming at Kenilworth, the meal is in Earlsdon, a 10 minute drive away from the swimming pool.
A copy of the menu will be forwarded onto all club members in the next couple of weeks, we are looking to get those who are attending to highlight their selections on the menu and send it with payment to Bill, before the presentation evening. That way all we have to worry about is drinks on the evening.
A number of club members have already registered with the league
All members who register with the league will get a ranking against everyone else in the league at the end of the season. If we finish 3 league registered members in one of the league races then we get team points & we need to finish 3 league registered members in 4 races on the league list of events (see list at the end of the newsletter).

This is a good result considering when I have registered as a team member I was driving back from my parents in Manchester!
We should pick up more points in the team event, as we will register results from both Wolverhampton and at the Vitruvian.

Athlete Profile : Stef Moors
Based : Mol, Belgium
Club : DOK, Leen Bakker
Stef is known to a few Cov Tri members and has previously represented Cov Tri at the National Relays 2003 and also DOK at the super sprints at the same event.
Stef’s background was swimming and has only been actively training and competing in Triathlon for 18 months.
Stef is currently in the B team for DOK but with some good results this season, is hoping to break into the A team for 2005. This will mean that he will become a sponsored athlete or as we know them in this country, professional!
Stef will again be competing in this country in September at the above event along with a fellow DOK team member, Ken.
They will all be staying with Bill livingstone from Friday to Monday.
Stef, Ken, Lief and Jan are joining other spectators to watch the Vitruvian Middle Distance race ( I am not allowed to call it a ½ Ironman®) on the Saturday to cheer on all who are competing / suffering from Cov Tri.
There will also be an open house back at Bills on the Saturday evening for all who wish to join Stef, Ken, Lief and Jan for a bite to eat and a few beers, I think pasta may just be on the menu!!!
On Sunday, it would be appreciated if those who are not competing could attend the Cotswold Tri to cheer on Stef and Ken in their race, I know they are both seeking podium places!
The Sunday night will involve talking them all to a traditional English restaurant for a celebration meal, the Bombay Palace in Earlsdon.
If you want any more details, drop me a line and I will get the necessary information to you.

The club membership is spread over a wide area so we are trying to find a quick means of providing a discussion forum etc etc for club members and visitors alike. Once registered you can create yourself a profile etc. There are any number of ways that this can benefit members and the club - arrange adhoc training sessions, post news, ask for advice, for sale wanted ads etc the list is endless.
Members Area
Whilst we do have communal training sessions etc, new members can have a host of questions about the sport and what they need to consider. Those progressing through the sport can benefit from the experience of those that have been and done it, and we do have an abundance of those people. It can become a perk of actually joining the club. This information is however with the members and we need to reply on people's goodwill to help populate the section.
Please have a think about how you could help and remember to log into this area you need a password. THIS IS RESTRICTED TO MEMBERS, providing we keep passwords etc secure.
These features do need the support of members if they are to be a success so please take a little time out to contribute as regularly as possible, I am sure it can benefit the club.
