Course Description:

The Environmental Science curriculum is designed to continue student investigations of science that began in grades K-8 and provide students the necessary skills to be proficient in Environmental Science. Environmental Science is a curriculum that is designed to introduce students to major ecological concepts and the environmental problems that affect the world in which we live. There is an urgent need for environmental education. This program provides one way in which students can become aware of the interactions of people and their environment. The curriculum focuses on concepts that are real-life issues. It promotes awareness and understanding of practical everyday problems that affect their lives. It also relates important environmental issues to the lives of students and their families. This is a lab and field-based course.

Policy and Procedures:

We all have to follow policies and procedures throughout life. We use policies and procedures every day ranging from procedures for driving a car to mailing a letter. The following is a partial list of policies and procedures that are essential for success in my classroom.

Absences:

The Greene County School System has adopted a new policy on attendance. Please be sure to read it completely in the student handbook. We will follow the tardy and attendance policy described in the student handbook. Tardy students should sign in on the clipboard near the door. Attach any notes or list any excuses on the clipboard. This helps me maintain a more accurate attendance record and allows as little class disruption as possible. Failure to sign in may result in being counted absent the entire class. I’ll be glad to answer any questions about attendance before or after class.

No candy or food is allowed in the classroom:

1. No cell phones, Ipods, MP3 players, etc, onin the class. This is in accordance to school board policy and these items will be confiscated if I hear them or see them out.

2.Abusive language, especially cussing, or abusive actions ewill not be tolerated in my classroom. Students are expected to treat other students with respect.

3. Three tardiesare equal to one absence. Therefore it is important that students are in their seat before the tardy bell rings. The 4th tardy will be reported to parent for disciplinary actions

4. You are expected to attend to all personal matters between classes. You are expected to remember to bring all necessary class materials. You are provided a hall pass to leave the classroom. This hall pass should only be used in emergencies. Each student will be allowed a total of 3 hall passes per nine weeks in case of an emergency. If used by student more than three times per nine weeks, each time after the third will be counted as tardy. Attached to the hall pass privileges is a time limit of 5 minutes. If a student uses a hall pass and is gone longer than 5 minutes, this will be counted as a tardy.

The following is a list of dates which students will receive either a progress report or a grade card. Should your child not bring home a report on these dates, I encourage you to contact the school. More frequent progress reports may be sent periodically if time permits or when requested by guardian parent.

Grading:

Nine weeks grades will be an average of quizzes, class-work, bell-ringers , test, and any projects/labs assigned within the nine week period. All recorded grades will be averaged equally per nine weeks period. It is my hope that this system will make keeping up with students’ progress easier for myself and the students themselves.
