MG victorious in annual charity match

On Friday (8 April), MG Motor UK and the technical centre (SMTC) at Longbridge came together to fight it out on the football pitch all in the name of charity.

After a tough 90 minutes, MG earned the Longbridge bragging rights as they reclaimed the trophy after running out 3-1 winners in the annual charity match. Both teams raised over £200 for Macmillan Cancer.

The match was played in good spirits, with MG coming out victorious on a damp afternoon at Cadbury Park, Bourneville.

After dominating the open stages, it was MG that deservedly took the lead midway through the first half as captain Eddy Fogg fired the ball home from 12 yards following a flowing move down the right.

MG squandered several chances to double their lead before half time and came under pressure early in the second half. However, the MG defence stood firm and were rewarded for theirendeavours with a crucial second goal as Warehouse Operative Liam Hunter swept home on the hour mark.

SMTC dug deep to get themselves back in the game and took advantage when MG rearranged their back four through fatigue. Intern Jake Clapp struck superbly from 20 yards – a shot that dipped wickedly under the crossbar giving Inventory and Logistics Controller Pete Sabell in the MG goal no chance.

MG stood firm against a re-galvanised SMTC side and under the pressure put the game to bed with ten minutes remaining.Hunter was sent through one-on-one and made no mistake with the finish by sealing a 3-1 victory for MG.
