1.2SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type of valve indicated. Include body, seating, and trim materials; valve design; pressure and temperature classifications; end connections; arrangement; dimensions; and required clearances. Include list indicating valve and its application. Include rated capacities; shipping, installed, and operating weights; furnished specialties; and accessories.

1.3QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. ASME Compliance: ASMEB31.1 for power piping valves and ASMEB31.9 for building services piping valves.
  2. Exceptions: Domestic hot- and cold-water, sanitary waste, and storm drainage piping valves unless referenced.
  3. ASME Compliance for Ferrous Valves: ASMEB16.10 and ASMEB16.34 for dimension and design criteria.
  4. NSF Compliance: NSF61 for valve materials for potable-water service.

1.4DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Prepare valves for shipping as follows:
  2. Protect internal parts against rust and corrosion.
  3. Protect threads, flange faces, grooves, and weld ends.
  4. Set gate, and globe valves closed to prevent rattling.
  5. Set ball and plug valves open to minimize exposure of functional surfaces.
  6. Set butterfly valves closed or slightly open.
  7. Block check valves in either closed or open position.
  8. Use the following precautions during storage:
  9. Maintain valve end protection.
  10. Store valves indoors and maintain at higher than ambient dew-point temperature. If outdoor storage is necessary, store valves off the ground in watertight enclosures.
  11. Use sling to handle large valves. Rig sling to avoid damage to exposed parts. Do not use handwheels or stems as lifting or rigging points.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1MANUFACTURERS

  1. In other Part2 articles where subparagraph titles below introduce lists, the following requirements apply for product selection:
  2. Manufacturers: Unless otherwise directed by the Owner, provide products by one of the manufacturers specified.

2.2VALVES, GENERAL

  1. Refer to Part3 "Valve Applications" Article for applications of valves.
  2. Bronze or Brass Valves: NPS2 and smaller with threaded or Vic-Press 304™ ends, unless otherwise indicated.(Do not use brass on machine coolant systems)
  3. Ferrous Valves: NPS2-1/2 and larger with flanged or grooved ends, unless otherwise indicated.
  4. Valve Pressure and Temperature Ratings: Not less than indicated and as required for system pressures and temperatures.
  5. Valve Sizes: Same as upstream pipe, unless otherwise indicated.
  6. Valve Actuators:
  7. Chainwheel: For attachment to valves, of size and mounting height, as indicated in the "Valve Installation" Article in Part3.
  8. Gear Drive: For quarter-turn valves NPS 6 and larger.
  9. Handwheel: For valves other than quarter-turn types.
  10. Lever Handle: For quarter-turn valves NPS 4 and smaller, except plug valves.
  11. Wrench: For plug valves with square heads. Furnish Owner with 1 wrench for every 10 plug valves, for each size square plug head.
  12. Extended Valve Stems: On insulated valves.
  13. Valve Flanges: ASMEB16.1 for cast-iron valves, ASMEB16.5 for steel valves, and ASMEB16.24 for bronze valves.
  14. Valve Grooved Ends: AWWAC606.
  15. Solder Joint: With sockets according to ASMEB16.18.
  16. Caution: Use solder with melting point below 840 degF for check, gate, and globe valves; below 421 degF for ball valves.
  17. Threaded: With threads according to ASMEB1.20.1.
  18. Balancing Valves: NPS 2” and smaller with threaded ends unless noted otherwise; NPS 2-1/2” and larger with flanged or grooved ends unless noted otherwise.

2.152.18BALANCING VALVES

  3. Provide at a minimum of one portable meter with hard durable case, all hoses and fittings, and laminated flows charts to determine flow rates at devices.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1EXAMINATION

  1. Examine piping system for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance.
  2. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
  3. Examine valve interior for cleanliness, freedom from foreign matter, and corrosion. Remove special packing materials, such as blocks, used to prevent disc movement during shipping and handling.
  4. Operate valves in positions from fully open to fully closed. Examine guides and seats made accessible by such operations.
  5. Examine threads on valve and mating pipe for form and cleanliness.
  6. Examine grooved ends for indentations or projections in the area from pipe end to groove.
  7. Examine mating flange faces for conditions that might cause leakage. Check bolting for proper size, length, and material. Verify that gasket is of proper size, that its material composition is suitable for service, and that it is free from defects and damage.
  8. Do not attempt to repair defective valves; replace with new valves.
