SECTION 16140 - WIRING DEVICES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes receptacles, connectors, switches, and finish plates.

1.2  DEFINITIONS

  1. GFCI: Ground-fault circuit interrupter.

1.3  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, Article 100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
  2. Comply with NEMA WD 1.
  3. Comply with NEMA WD 6.
  4. Comply with NFPA 70.

1.4  COORDINATION

  1. Receptacles for Equipment: Match branch circuit wiring and outlet configuration to plug configuration indicated on approved equipment submittals.
  2. Cord and Plug Sets: Match plug configuration indicated on approved equipment submittals.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  MANUFACTURERS

  1. Manufacturers: Unless otherwise directed, provide products by one of the following:
  2. 125 Volt and 250 Volt Wiring Devices
  3. Arrow Hart Div.; Cooper Industries.
  4. GE Company; GE Wiring Devices.
  5. Hubbell, Inc.; Wiring Devices Div.
  6. 480 Volt “Maintenance” Receptacles
  7. Crouse Hinds “Arktite”
  8. Russellstoll “Max-Gard”
  9. Square D
  10. Appleton

2.2  RECEPTACLES

  1. Straight-Blade and Locking Receptacles: Heavy-duty grade.
  2. Provide blade configurations per NEMA WD1.
  3. GFCI Receptacles: Feed-through type, with integral NEMA WD 6, Configuration 520R duplex receptacle.
  4. Connect to protect downstream receptacles on same circuit
  5. Receptacle suitable for installation in a 2-3/4-inch-deep box without adapter.

2.3  SWITCHES

  1. Snap Switches: Heavy-duty, quiet type, 125 Volt or 250 Volt rating, coordinated with the branch circuit.
  2. Incandescent Dimmer Switches: Modular, full-wave, solid-state units with integral, quiet on/off switches and audible and electromagnetic noise filters.
  3. Single-pole or three-way operation to suit connections
  4. Soft tap or other quiet operation ON/OFF switch
  5. Continuously adjustable slide control.
  6. Modular, full-wave, solid-state design
  7. Integral, quiet on/off switches
  8. Electromagnetic filter(s) to eliminate audible noise, RF, and TV interference;
  9. Color-coded, integral 5-inch wire connecting leads

2.4  WALL PLATES

  1. Single, combination and multi-gang types to match corresponding wiring devices.
  2. Material for finished spaces:
  3. 0.04-inch-thick, Type 302, satin-finished stainless steel.
  4. Provide cover plate securing screws with head color to match plate finish.
  5. Material for unfinished spaces:
  6. Galvanized steel.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  INSTALLATION

  1. Install devices and assemblies plumb and secure.
  2. Provide dimmer switches to achieve indicated rating after derating factors for ganging are applied, as instructed by manufacturer.
  3. Do not share neutral conductor on load side of dimmers installed on different branch circuits.
  4. Orientation of Devices: Unless otherwise indicated, mount flush, with long dimension vertical and grounding terminal of receptacles on top. Group adjacent switches under single face, multigang wall plates.
  5. Adjust locations of floor service outlets and telephone/power service poles to suit arrangement of partitions and furnishings.
  6. Install wall plates after painting is complete.
  7. Install devices after painting is complete, or protect devices during painting.

3.2  CONNECTIONS

  1. Connect wiring device grounding terminal to branch-circuit equipment grounding conductor.
  2. Tighten electrical connectors and terminals according to manufacturer’s published torque-tightening values. If manufacturer’s torque values are not indicated, use those specified in UL 486A and UL 486B.

3.3  FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

  1. Test receptacles for proper polarity and ground continuity.
  2. Test GFCI operation.
  3. Replace damaged or defective devices and components.

3.4  CLEANING

  1. Internally clean devices, device outlet boxes, and enclosures. Replace stained or improperly painted wall plates or devices.
