CHRISTMAS TO THE CROSS

As you move about these hallowed halls and grounds it would be well worth your time and effort to mosey into the Service Classroom for a brief visit. You’ll see pictures of our current and former buildings, photos of past classes and class presidents, and other items often found in a Sunday School room. Up close to the piano, you’ll see a wooden cross. That cross is the thing I really want you to notice.

It’s not like the Service Class is the only Sunday School with a cross. In fact, many, if not most classes, around our church and other churches probably have a cross of some sort on a table or on the wall. This, however, is a most unique cross.

For starters, it is larger than most you’d find in a classroom as it stands a good four feet in height. It also has knots and sticker points protruding out from both the vertical and the horizontal pieces so that it has a rugged look to it. History, however, is what really makes it stand out in its uniqueness.

That cross was made from the trunk of the first Chrismon tree our congregation ever had. Fran Torbert and Peggy Anthony sawed the tree up, lashed the pieces together with rope, and then mounted the cross on a pedestal. The class brings it out each year during Lent as a reminder of the season and, knowing the history, of the traditions and earlier years of our church.

There’s something spiritually profound about linking Christmas and Easter, the Manger and the Cross. Bethlehem is only truly understood when seen in light of that old rugged cross. All that began on that starry night so long ago found its fulfillment on those roughhewn timbers of Good Friday and in that gloriously empty tomb on Sunday morning. Happy Easter!

God bless,

Herb

The flowers on the altar this Sunday are given to the glory of God in love memory of Henrietta DeFoor, by Pat Dodson and family.

YOUTH B.L.O.G.

BELIEVING. LIVING. OPENLY. FOR GOD

March 26th, 2013

Today I am standing once again on the promises of God, he promised to givestrength to the weary, and increase the power of the weak, he also promised that he would be with me till the endof the ages. ThatHe would hold me upwhen I could not stand on my own.I am in need of his power, I am stepping out on yet another limb he has called me onto. The weight of my weakness is no doubt too great for the tiny limb to hold alone, yet with each step and thetrembling of the limb I go further to the edge of my comfort zone, trying as I may to not look down or left or right and lose my focus on the only thing holding me up. I will be victorious, not for my own gain, but for the glory of God. My mouthwillopen and words will flow from a place my mind knew not existed till the power of the HolySpirit leads me. The calm that will flow over me as I speak will come fromthe spring of living water and wash away all doubt and fear. I will stand at the bitter edge of the tiny limb full of confidence, not of my own, but of the power of God.

Hold on to the promises, they will never fail you!

Trembling the leaves off the limb, but ready to stand at its edge,

jason
