CHRISTMAS IN THREE WORDS

Based on the advertisement for Marks and Spencer. There are three characters who give their version of Christmas prompted by the interviewer. It could be done all as one piece of drama or as a series of sketches at intervals within a service building up to a final denouement.

InterviewerChristmas, a special time for all the family. Could you sum up what Christmas means for you – in just three words?

ChildLots of presents. [Holds up present]

MumLots of shopping. [Lifts shopping bags]

DadLots of bills. [Holds up bills]

ChildThe Christmas pantomime.

MumThe office party. [Blows party blower]

Dad[Suggestively] Pulling a cracker. [Mum glares at him and jabs him in the ribs]

ChildParties at school.

MumEating too much.

DadDrinking too much. [Surreptitious swig from bottle away from Mum]

ChildWaking at 5.

MumSquabbles at 6.

DadBedlam at 7. [Covers ears]

ChildChocolates for breakfast. [Holds up chocolate]

MumTurkey for dinner.

DadTurkey for days. [Holds stomach looking ill]

ChildThe family together.

Mum15 for lunch.

DadWashing it up. [Holds up dishcloth and brush]

ChildWallace and Grommit. [Holds up Wallace and Grommit]

MumThe Queen’s speech.

DadSleeping it off.

InterviewerHaven’t you missed something out?

ChildI don’t think so.

MumWe’ve mentioned most things.

DadWe’ve been pretty thorough.

InterviewerIf I say it is Christ-mas, does that ring any bells?

Child Sleigh bells ringing?

MumChurch choirs singing?

Dad[Realisation is dawning] The penny’s dropping. [The others look at him in surprise. He whispers to them. Their faces light up in realisation]

ChildBirthday of Jesus.

MumGod with us.
