PHILOSOPHY OF PROGRAM

The purpose of this program is to enhance the religion curriculum at Guardian Angels Church by enabling the students to put into practice what they learn about their faith. It is the duty of all Christians to reach out in service to those around them. The students may do so in any of the following settings: the parish community, school, their families and/or the community at-large. This outreach may be done by individual students, as well as by students working in groups.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to complete the following number of service hours per year:

Grade 1 2 hours Grade 4 8 hours Grade 7 25 hours

Grade 2 4 hours Grade 5 10 hours Grade 8 25 hours

Grade 3 6 hoursGrade 612 hours

These hours are to be completed between May 6, 2017 and May 4, 2018. This component of the religion curriculum is weighted as a grade and counted in the third trimester grade for religion. Students failing to fulfill the required number of hours of service will be evaluated on the service that they have done by May 6th. Any unfulfilled hours will not be added to the student's required number of hours in the next school year. The grade will also be determined by the student's written reflections on service, which will be submitted to the religion teacher in the third trimester.

The following list contains suggestions of ways in which the students may volunteer their time in service to others. This list is by no means complete. Students may also submit original proposals for their service. These proposals will be subject to the approval of the parents, religion teacher and Director of Religious Education. Please keep in mind that the G.A. Servathon day, may NOT be used as service hours, since the students are doing this in place of schoolwork. Also, you may not use participation in the liturgy (petition readings, gift bearer, etc.) as service hours.
