CHRISTIAN EDUCATION COMMITTEE
In 2014, our Sunday School program included classes for children and youth of all ages under the guidance of Ashlee Pitts, Bob Lovins, Heather Brooks, Jackie Montgomery, Rick Mergy, Denise Vandiver, Nancy Telander, Hannah Tucker, Bob Henning, and Ron Rucker. After our Rally Day on September 7, the curriculum for these classes changed from a rotational model to the FaithWeaver NOW series, which has nursery through Adult levels and a class specifically tailored to parents. FaithWeaver NOW focuses on the same scripture for all age groups each Sunday to enhance discussion throughout the week and interaction among all generations of the congregation.
In addition to the new Parents’ FaithWeaver NOW Sunday School class, our two long-standing Adult classes continued through 2014. The Grace class enjoyed another year of rich, deep learning, rotating among the following teachers - Rev. James Peacock, Rev. Bob Montgomery, Dr. James Monroe, Walker Paramore (who joined the Church Triumphant at the end of this year),and others! The Present Word, a Biblically-based, discussion-oriented class also met on Sunday mornings. Several adults participated in other study/fellowship opportunities: the Monday Morning Bible Study andthe 4F Group, which met the last Friday of each month for Food, Fellowship, and Fun on Fridays (4F). Lastly, the group formerly called “Good Grief” changed its name to “Life Happens” and continued to focus on assisting those experiencing loss of all kinds.
“The Armor of God” from Ephesians was the theme for Vacation Bible Camp during the first week of June. With the help of dozens of volunteers, 54 children had a marvelous week of learning through games, music, art, cooking, Bible lessons, and special guests.
The resignation of our Director of Christian Education, Beth House, was regretfully received by the Session in August. The Christian Education Committee, whose members were Sherwood DeForest, Martha Ann McCaskill, Rick Mergy, and Jackie Montgomery, worked diligently throughout the year to strengthen our Christian Education programs at Lafayette, for which I thank them heartily. We continue to crave your prayers, your efforts, and your gifts of time and talent!
In faith and service,
Bob Lovins
