Scholarship Information

The Christel R. Helmchen Scholarship is given in memory of a young woman who lost her life while working to earn money for college. Christel was interested in the cultural exchanges between German & American youth. Because Christel learned to appreciate and love the German people and their culture during her two trips to Germany, a German requirement has been included in the scholarship eligibility criteria.

We will be awarding a scholarship to a student who has studied high school German for at least 2 years and has applied to a college or university. Applicants must be students of Chesterton High School. Applicants will be chosen on the basis of financial need, scholastic ability, and evidence of sincere interest in continuing their education.

Application Procedure

Applicants must return the completed application to the

CHS College & Career Center by April 13th.

Applicants must have a minimum of two years of German in the Duneland Schools and currently be in 12th grade.

Each applicant must secure a letter of recommendation from each of the following:

  1. A teacher within the Duneland School Corporation
  2. A non-relative from the community, but not a second teacher

Letters of recommendation must be received by the guidance office or career center by April 13th.

Each applicant must prove acceptance to a college or university. If the scholarship recipient is unable to attend college, the money must be returned.
