GETTING TO KNOW OUR PARISH FAMILY

[Written by Judy Sandler, parish reporter]

Daopu and Tonye Numbere:

The Numberes started life and were raised in Nigeria, separately traveled the world and ended up together in Rolla, Missouri. Their families knew each other when Tonye and Daopu were in high school. With a five year difference in their ages, they were not dating, but their paths did cross about fourteen years later when Tonye was a graduate student in Kansas and Daopu became a Petroleum Faculty member at UMR. Then came the dating part, and two years later came marriage, at Christ Episcopal Church in Rolla with Father Carlo officiating. The date was December 29, 1987. Happy belated 20th anniversary!

Tonye’s Ph.D. is in Horticulture with a specialty in Physiology and Biochemistry of Plants from KansasStateUniversity. She earned her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees at the same institution. Daopu’s B.S. in Mechanical Engineering came from the University of Wales, Swansea; his M.S. in Petroleum Engineering is from Stanford, and his Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering with specialty in Reservoir Engineering was earned at the University of Oklahoma.

As anyone acquainted with the Numberes knows, they enjoy traveling and do a lot of it. Of course there are trips to visit family in Nigeria, and, individually or together, they have gone to Ghana, South Africa, Algeria, Cameroon and Togo. They have visited most states in this country and have been to a good part of Canada. In Europe, the sights of England, Wales, France, Italy, and Belgium have attracted them, and in Asia the countries of Malaysia, Turkey and Japan have been visited.

Tonye enjoys cooking, designing, sewing, knitting, crocheting and plant culture. Daopu likes reading, soccer and tennis. Both play a mean game of table tennis. At Christ Church Tonye was a delegate to the convention in the 1990s, and she currently shares her cooking skills with folks who come to Open Door. Daopu served as Chair of the Men’s Dinner Committee, and you will see him waiting tables at that dinner each year.

When asked if either she or her husband was musically inclined, Tonye replied, “Daopu thinks he can play the guitar! If so, I have a great singing voice!!”

Eunice French:

When I asked Eunice if she was a Rolla native, she laughed and said that she considers herself a Louisiana Cajun. She was born and raised in Louisiana and lived there until she and her husband, Jerry, moved to Rolla in 1958. The French’s have four children, three sons and a daughter, all living in the Rolla area. They have ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A tradition in their household is to serve Gumbo at Christmas and for birthdays. (Can you imagine how big that pot must be?)

Eunice has been a member of ChristChurch for the past thirty years. She has served two terms on the Vestry and was instrumental in establishing the position of Superintendent of Sunday Schools. She taught Sunday School and said she tried to relate the Sunday lesson to everyday life so that it would be more meaningful to the children. For about six years she worked on the Companion Diocese Relationship Committee and was especially involved with the program in Puerto Rico.

For the first ten years or so of her marriage, Eunice was a stay-at-home mom. She accepted a job as secretary-stenographer at UMR and then worked in UMR’s International Program Department from 1976 to 1996. As director of that program she traveled to numerous countries—Thailand, Japan, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Taiwan and Malaysia, to name a few. She said this travel experience gave her a new appreciation for our own country. After her retirement from UMR, she worked with one of her sons in his business, a retail Karaoke store, for five years. She went from that to working with another son, serving as a receptionist in his real estate agency. Eunice earned her own real estate license, and she has been doing that for five years; she is currently with Century 21, Rolla. Never let it be said that Eunice has not put her education to good use. She has a BA in Economics from UMR and a MBA from Drury. When, you might ask, did she have time to pursue her schooling? She did it while working full-time at UMR!

In her spare time (?), Eunice volunteers and quilts. For the last two years she has been working with the American Heart Association, in particular with organizing the Go Red for Women luncheon held in Rolla. For many years she was a PhelpsCountyRegionalMedicalCenter volunteer; one could find her manning the gift shop there. By her own admission, her quilting project—to make a quilt for each grandchild for his or her high school graduation—has fallen a little behind. She says that at this point she “owes” three quilts.

Eunice would like her ChristChurch family to know that her faith and her family are the most important things in her life. She is proud of her family and proud of her almost fifty-one year marriage. The French’s renewed their wedding vows in October, 2007 at ChristChurch.

ECW LUNCHEON

[Submitted by Virginia Lomax, ECW President]

The next Episcopal Church Women meeting will be Tuesday, February 5, at 10 a.m. in the Library, following the Eucharist at 9:30 a.m. There will be a program presented by Boo Eversman about her recent trip to Antarctica—a chilling experience! Please come.

The ECW is starting to plan the Annual Spring Luncheon and asks that the congregation provide input on the following ideas that will be discussed and finalized at the February 5 meeting: 1. Should we consider changing the date from April 22 (Administrative Professionals Day) to another date to avoid conflicts that have occurred in previous years? 2. Should we consider returning to the “Tasting Luncheon” concept, as is frequently requested? 3. Would a salad luncheon be appealing?

Appreciate any input.
