Children and Family Worker (p/t)

Background:

Christ Church Baptist (CCB) is a medium sized Baptist church for all ages, situated in the heart of Kings Langley – just off the High Street. The church is made up of people of all ages and backgrounds. CCB aims to be a church community alive with the presence of God, seeking to be Christ’s disciples inside the church, in our daily lives and in our local community. In the area of children and young people we aim to be to be a church that encourages, engages, and enables children, youth and families to discover and grow in faith, with the hope that they become young disciples and potentially part of the fellowship.

Kings Langley has a few pre-school groups, a Primary School, Secondary School and Steiner School – all within walking distance of the church. Being a commuter village, our community attracts young families. For Pre and Primary School age children, CCB has for many years had a popular mid week ‘toddlers’ group – now called First Steps – and on Sunday mornings a crèche, Minnows Group and Jim Jams for this age band.At present CCB also has 2 Friday evening groups for 7-11 years called 7-Up and a trial group for 5-7 years called 5-Alive. Young people’s work* currently includes Revel8 on Friday evenings for 11-18 years and Crave on Sunday mornings. (This area is under review*)

Purpose of role:

The role of Children and Families Worker (CFW) is a new one. It is a 1-year contract starting in September 2015, with the hope it would be extended for a further 2nd year until 2017.

The purpose of the role is:

a)To seek to disciple children in relevant ways.

b)To nurture and develop current activities.

c)To develop and support volunteers - and identify new volunteers.

d)To identify and develop fresh opportunities within and outside CCB.

e)To keep the church congregation informed about children’s and families work.

f)To work alongside the Minister, Deacons and key leaders to develop an overarching vision for children and families for the next 3 years.

Reporting Line, Accountability and Support:

Reporting Line:The CFW will be Line and Performance Managed by the Minister and mentored by someone other than a Deacon.

Accountability: The CFW will be expected to make regular reports to the Deacons and Church Meeting. The post-holder would also be expected to share stories and updates with CCB on Sunday Mornings.

SupportGroup:A new group to be made up of a Deacon and children’s group leaders. This group will meet once a term and be part of shaping current and future developments.

Key Tasks:

a)Children’s Group Leaders:Enable, support, equip and develop present and future children’s group leaders.

b)Children’s Groups: involvement in First Steps, 5-Alive, 7-Up and Sunday morning activities.

c)Children: develop and disciple existing relationships with children already at CCB.

d)Existing relationships with families: alongside current leaders,strengthen relationships with children and families already attending or involved with CCB. Liaise with the Pastoral care group when required.

e)Youth work leaders – Liaise with them on regular basis.

f)Fresh Opportunities: Discuss and implement fresh opportunities in liaison with the leaders/CFW Support Group, Minister and Church.

g)Kings Langley Primary School: forge links and develop relationships with the school.

Terms and Conditions:

Hours -15 hours per week includingSunday mornings.

Salary - £7,500 per annum.

Probationary Period - 3 months.

Appraisal & reviews–to be undertakenby the Minister.

Holiday entitlement - equivalent to 28 days per year pro rata.

Training and development-egattending national Children’s Work conference.

Enhanced DBS check – all subject to this check.

Church Life – play a full part in the general life of CCB.

Personal Specification:

  • Good communicationand presentation skills
  • Experience and passion for working with 0-11 year olds in formal or informal setting
  • Self starter
  • Team player
  • Good working knowledge of use of social media and IT.
  • Good basic administration and personal organisation skills
  • Mature Christian faith
