Choral Call to Worship The Lord Is in His Holy Temple

* All Praise to God, Who Reigns Above Trinity Hymnal № 4

*Prayer of Invocation and Thanksgiving

*Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Proverbs 27:1-9

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;a stranger, and not your own lips. A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty,

but a fool's provocation is heavier than both. Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming,but who can stand before jealousy? Better is open rebukethan hidden love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend;

profuse are the kisses of an enemy. One who is full loathes honey,

but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet. Like a bird that strays from its nestis a man who strays from his home. Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.

*Praise Song

Spirit of the Living God Trinity Hymnal No 726

Unison Confession

Almighty God, who is rich in mercy to all those who call upon You; hear us as we come to You humbly confessing our sins and transgressions; and imploring Your mercy and forgiveness. We have broken Your holy laws by our deeds and by our words, and by the sinful affections of our hearts. We confess before You our disobedience and ingratitude, our pride and willfulness; And all our failures and shortcomings toward You and toward our fellow men. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; And of Your great goodness grant that we may hereafter serve and please You in newness of life; Through the merit and mediation of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Private Confession

Assurance of Pardon

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. May the God of Mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Sermon Notes

Introduction: A key thought: We’ve heard the phrase, Charity begins at home; so does evangelism. Those closest to us is where we begin telling how Jesus has saved us. That is the main message of Jesus’ encounter with the Gerasene demoniacs. Donald Grey Barnhouse illustrated this in the story of “The Elephantiasis Convert.”

1. Jesus Confronted by the Unclean Spirit – vs. 1 – 6

a.

b.

2. Jesus Recognized by the Demons – v. 7 – 13

a.

b.

3. The Reactions of the Men and Herdsmen – v. 14 – 20

a.

b.

Conclusion:

  1. The wind and the waves obey Jesus and so do the demonic spirits. In writing his hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” Martin Luther described the devil and his demons this way: “One little word shall fell them.” That one word is the Name of Jesus!
  2. Jesus rejects a volunteer but commissions a missionary.

Welcome

Welcome to Covenant Presbyterian Church. We are a church that is resolved, as the Apostle Paul said, to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. This means we are a community seeking to discover just how amazing the love of God is, as we see it in the Gospel.

We are glad you are here, and we hope that you will find that there is a place for you at CPC as we worship Christ together.

Please introduce yourself to us by filling in a Guest Card, which you should find in the pews in front of you. These cards simply help us to know who you are, and how we can best serve you.
