Choir Director Job Description

Young Audiences New York, a leader in multidisciplinary arts education for New York City public schools, seeks a dynamic and experienced Choir Director to lead the Young Audiences New York Youth Choir. The mission of the Choir is to provide free, professional level vocal music training and performance opportunities for students of all abilities and experience from NYC public high schools.

Duties and Responsibilities

·  Will work in tandem with Young Audiences New York to develop the scope and style of the Music Unites Youth Choir.

·  Responsible for providing the artistic leadership of the Choir, keeping in line with the mission and practices of Young Audiences New York.

·  Assist Young Audiences in recruitment and retention of students.

·  Interviewing and selecting choir members.

·  Build an ensemble of diverse young people from all over the city.

·  Provide high-quality music instruction for young people of varying abilities and experience.

·  Design and lead weekly rehearsals from November through May leading to a minimum of two public performances per year.

·  Foster the use of music as a means for personal expression.

·  Work with the choir members to develop a new and innovative repertoire that reflects the mission and energy of the ensemble.

·  Collaborate with composers and lyricists to assist the students in the creation and performance of original music.

The Ideal Candidate

Young Audiences is looking for an inspiring and resourceful individual who can build and lead a youth choir that captures the spirit of New York City youth. Our ideal director would approach this task with dedication, energy, passion and humor, and will embrace the collaborative practice of Young Audiences New York.

Qualifications

·  A minimum of 3 years of choral conducting experience.

·  Substantial experience working with teens, preferably in NYC.

·  Ability to work with singers of varying levels of musical training.

·  Experience and interest in conducting a variety of musical styles including gospel, pop, musical theater, and classical.

·  Flexible with a good sense of humor.

·  Theater experience a plus.

·  Must be available Monday afternoons from 4:30-6:30 for rehearsals.

Position begins November 2013
