Delaware & Raritan Canal Feeder
The Pennsylvania Canal Society, the D&R Canal Watch, and the Canal Society of New Jersey are sponsoring a motor coach tour of the Delaware and Raritan Canal Feeder on our Fall 2017 Field Trip on October 20–22. The motor coach will leave our hotel at 8 AM on Saturday the 21st.
Bob Barth will lead our tour of the 22-mile feeder along the Delaware River and the tidal area of the D&R Canal above Bordentown, including Lock 1. We’ll start at Bulls Island and then visit the Prallsville Mill, Lambertville, Washington’s Crossing, and the Battle Monument and confluence in Trenton. Finally we’ll take NJ Transit Light Rail at Bordentown and follow the route of the canal and the Camden and Amboy RR.
Our hotel for the tour is the Holiday Inn in Bensalem, PA. Optional Sunday tours may include the Roebling Museum, Grounds for Sculpture, the Kuser Farm Mansion, Howell Living History Farm, and the Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead.
Tour registration check-in is in the hotel lobby from 5 to 6 PM Friday. A Saturday preview by Bob Barth will be in the Greenwood or Schuylkill Room from 7 to 8 PM Friday. REGISTER EARLY – there will be only one bus and when it’s full, registrations will no longer be accepted.

Our group rate is $109 per night. Our hotel in Bensalem is a 3-star hotel and has an on-site restaurant, a fitness center, a business center, free internet, complimentary coffee, cable TV, coffee maker, and a mini-fridge. A limited number of microwaves are available by request. Note: breakfast is not included but available in the restaurant starting at 6:30 AM, or you may bring something you can prepare in your room. Street Road also has many places to eat within 2 miles or so of the hotel. Fast food is primarily 2 miles west of the hotel.
Saturday Evening Buffet Banquet
Our buffet banquet dinner will be at the hotel and willinclude a tossed salad, rolls & butter, Italian chicken, roast beef, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, vegetable medley, brownies and cookies, and coffee, tea, iced tea, and water. Gratuity is included.
Saturday Evening Presentation
Following our dinner, author Linda Barth will present a program on the D&R Canal. Linda has written two books, The Delaware and Raritan Canal and The Delaware and Raritan Canal at Work. She’s also written two children’s books,Bridgetender’s Boy and Hidden New Jersey. She and her husband have written two then-and-now books on local history.
